Oil Consumption

Oil Consumption
I have a '90 C2 coupe with 59K miles that I purchased about 5 months ago. After the PPI, there was some non-trivial engine work done just before I purchased it. Since I bought the car, I have driven it about 3K miles (street use - no racing) and it has used only one quart of oil and the oil dipstick level is still higher than the mark.
I have been checking the oil after returning home so the engine is hot - I leave the engine running, wipe the dipstick, and then insert it, remove to examine. Then the dipstick is wet from oil higher than the high mark.
I understand that Porsche recommends checking the oil very frequently which led me to assume that oil use might be high. Is this normal to have so little oil consumption for a 964 or am I maybe checking the oil incorrectly? Thanks for your help,
Bob D

If the dipstick is wet higher than the high mark (with engine warm on level surface), the oil is overfilled. The right amount is halfway between the two dipstick marks. Drain out a half quart and check it again.

Bob - I bought my car last september. From September to February, I drove about 3,000 miles and used no oil. I had a service and oil change done in February and had another one done 2 weeks ago, with about 5,000 miles of driving in between. During that time I only bought 2 quarts of oil and probably only put a little more than one in the car (and I drive the tach up fairly often).

Hi Guys,
I bought my car (which has 57k miles on it now) about 2 months ago and got it serviced first thing.
I have since driven about 1700 miles and the gauge in the dash is only now starting to be on the red. So, that makes about 1 liter (= 1 quart) roughly every 2000 miles for me. Not too bad really.

The official Porsche oil comsumption figure is 1.5litres per 1000klms. About 1 quart per 416 miles.
In the USA the recommended oil service interval is 3000 miles. No such recommendation is applicable to Europe. We do ours every 20,000klm.
Personally checking the oil is up to each owner. For the record my oil comsumption is around 1 ltre per 15,000klm.
