Default Racecar Project

Here is the beginning of my racecar project which is starting life out as a 1993 C2 to be turned into a 2100lbs RSR with many 993RSR updates. Chassis has just come out of the acid dip process and is ready for seam welding and cage installation.

so that's what the skeleton looks like. Hope I never have to see mine like that. Good luck with the project and keep the pictures coming.

What a fun project! Please keep us posted on the progress! These kind of posts are fun - similar to what R. Linton does with Humpty Dumpty!

That will be one light car! Did you weigh the body before and after the dip? I am curious how much weight comes off.

Thanks again for sharing.

I second Garrett's request for you to keep us posted. I wish I could do what you're doing, but I'll settle for living vicariously through your posts!

Is the zinc coating able to survive the acid dipping process or will it be removed as a result? I do realize that it is of no consequence for a racer, but suppose that one were to use this proccess for a restoration project? What does this intale as to cost and time consumption?

Its not even close to Robert's car, I think he is already at my target weight and he still has all of the glass and steel panels. Not to mention much better quality parts. I could post some of the CF parts I bought for the car, but they would pale in comparison since they are wet lay up, not autoclaved like Robert's parts.

Sitting in the car is a solid roof section I won on eBay for $26 to replace the sunroof which weighed in excess of 56lbs. You can also see turbo flares off of an 86 turbo that I am going to recycle onto this car. The rest is fiberglass except for the doors, front splitter, and rear wing which are CF. The wiring harness weighed 55lbs and the HVAC weighed 30lbs. I cut another 20lbs out of the car by removing all of the unnecessary brackets and junk.

I wasn't able to weigh the chassis prior to the dipping process and weight removal was not the purpose. The seam sealer in the car needs to be removed in order to be able to seam weld the chassis. I have received conflicting answers to what happens to the Zinc coating. Some say it is removed, others say that it remains...I don't know. I dropped the car off last weekend, they baked the car in a furnace which turns everything to ash, then they it gets dipped in acid to remove the ash, then dipped in a neutralizing bath to clean the acid, then pressure washed and finally a rust inhibitor applied, and then baked again to dry it out. I picked up the car today.

The car will have airjacks and centerlock hubs with 993GT2evo uprights and 4 channel ABS with a racing brain. 6 speed trans with a 375hp engine running MoTeC and 93 octane fuel with a digital ADL dash. It will replace my current MoTeC turbo car.

Gee whiz, ONLY 2100 pounds? Egad, man. I have to ask what a beast like that is legal to race in? I presume a top level PCA class?

Nice doors!! Those things will save a lot of weight! Thanks also for the information about the stripping - very interesting. Keep it coming!

The car will be legal for PCA GT2 S or R classes, and can be run in SVRA or HSR historic races as a period correct car. The car is really a platform for me to try some new engine development parts as well as some electronics. It will have traction control, pit speed limiting, shock position sensors, steering position, 3 axis g sensor, and as mentioned only a single LCD panel for a gauge.
