I finally got fed up with my front hood shocks failing every other time my head was directly below the sharp & pointy locking hook in the front trunk so I ordered ($17) the hood support pin & bracket from the european Carrera RS.

Does anyone have a photo of the proper mounting location under the front hood for this bracket (far right in the above photo) and for the clip that attaches with the two tapping screws, where the aluminum support snaps into place when the trunk is closed (top center in the above photo)?

Is this a genuine Porsche part? If so, can I trouble you for the source? My shocks are spent as well....when its cold out, its a real joy to go to the supermarket and use my forehead as a prop rod while loading groceries into the trunk!

And $17?????? I didn't know there were any parts for our cars that could be purchased for $17!!!! Are you sure you did not forget a couple zeros?????

You will also need a part number 999.085.001.02 socket head nut which will replace the normal nut mounting the front suspension mount at the position shown.

I will try to take a photo later today and give you a measurement of where to locate the upper part of the rod to the hood.

One thing to keep in mind is that the rod is designed to support a substantially lighter aluminum hood so you may not want to remove both your dead hood shocks.

Yup, this is a genuine Porsche aluminum tent stake. In the USA these are special order so the best and cheapest place to buy them is from a mail-order Porsche dealership. I placed my order on December 2nd and stuff was shipped to me on the 23th. Special orders parts from Germany can be shipped quicker you just have to pay your dealer $20 more. The parts you need are;

I just looked in the Technical Workshop manuals and it shows four (4) additional rivets that attach the support bracket to the hood, of course they aren't listed in PET. They are aluminum 3.2mm x 5.8mm. I'll look for part numbers sometime other than today, I have to leave now. Happy New Year!!!

Thanks, I had no idea. I went to the "front cover" section of PET and ordered everything that said "Carrera RS" except for the hood itself.

I would really appreciate the measurements. I should have read the page in the workshop manuals, I totally missed the rivets and the socket head nut.

Here is measurement that may work for you. The distance from the edge of hole closest to bracket and edge of bracket is 90 mm. I am hopeful the steel hood has the same hole to measure from.

One thing worries me: the steel hood is *very* heavy, to the point of being a pain to lift without the shocks. I would not trust this flimsy rod to hold it open alone.
Are you keeping the worn shocks on to help the rod, or removing them? Or do you have an aluminum hood already?

Yup,
The RS bonnet is aluminium (aluminum) so it is much lighter. I don't think I'd be happy to have support only on one side. Has anyone with standard hood done this yet? I'd be interested to know how robust this support is.

Also, helpful morons try to close the hood without noting it is not supported in the usual fashion and thus bend the rod for you- would be a real issue with a heavier hood and an overstressed rod.

I would be leaning towards using 2 prop rods with a steel hood.

(I'm too embarassed to post pictures, as the insides of my Cup hood are not nearly as clean as 964RS and Cupcar )

For the time being I plan to keep the old non-working hood shocks in place. When spring comes and my garage isn't freezing cold I'll pull out the shocks and see what happens. If worse comes to worse I suppose I could always just buy an aluminum hood...

They are no longer made of aluminum, they are made of unobtainium.

The factory has not had in stock for some years.
