Hi again,

I wanted to update you with the continuation of the original thread.

After some kilometers the clutch failed.. I was stopped at the traffic light, I depressed the clutch pedal to engage the first gear and "tump" the pedal goes flat to the floor. Contacted a couple of people and they both agree that the pressure plate failed. Istead I thought that it could have beed some seals in the hydraulic spiston of the clutch. The reason is that I cant figure out how a pressure plate can fail so quickly. And here my second doubt: the noise i was describing at the beginning of the thread, could it be related to the failere of the pressure plate.?

thank you for your opinion

Andrea

the pedal is flat to the floor, hence no possibility to pump. no leaks. no low levels of fluids.

Hi there, new to this forum and just wanted to see if you had any other tell tale signs of the clutch issue Andrea? i have recently bought a 964 RS low mileage and taken it on a long run from the South of England home to Scotland and have had some concerning noises. first noise was almost imperceptible but as said with limited sound proofing and no radio you pick them up.

the noise occurred while at motorway speeds cruising on or off light throttle at 3000rpm there is a little rotating squeak. not the altenator, already checked that, but it does sound like a dry bearing or similar. The second noise was while in neutral, standing still and while revs drop off after being revved there is a dragging sound coming from the engine/clutch. Are any of these noises/sounds recognisible?

regards

I suspect none of these noises are unusual - there is a heck of a lot of noise from the lightweight flywheel and gearbox when in neutral - it's just general driveline chatter, which is accentuated by the lack of sound insulation. Put your foot on the clutch and most of the noise will go away.

Can't help you with the squeak - unlikely to be anything catastrophic - these things are pretty tough. They all make noises that sound horribly un-natural, but that's part of the charm !

Does the squeak also happen when the clutch takes up the drivetrain load - ie when pulling away in 1st? I get this sometimes (I have the RS Clutch kit) and I've been told it's likely the throw out bearing on it's way out.

Andy/Jamie,

Thank you very much for your response, the noise i'm getting is different from the chattering you get from the single mass flywheel and the dragging does sound like a clutch/bearing thing. i don't know if the squeak is linked to the neutral dragging thing or not but it does sound like a dry bearing issue.

I'm having a Porsche specialist pop over soon so i look forward to hear what he says. I'll keep you posted but as a minimum i think i'm going to hcange the clutch as i think there will be a bit of a road trip coming up soon and want to have additional confidence that things will be fine. any additional service points out with the general oil, filters etc... would be good to know of. i've heard that some three in one on the distributor shafts is also a good idea??

Any thoughts on whether it could be a pilot bearing issue?

Al, here's some reading on the pilot bearing idea -

Rennlist forums - Help - Premature pilot bearing failure

Rennlist forums - clutch humming/buzzing noise when cold. Only when clutch is to the floor

Rennlist forums - Clutch noise when pedal pressed - pilot or release bearing?

Rennlist forums - Bad pilot bearing or something else?

It seems like a pilot bearing issue is likely when the sounds occur on depressing the clutch pedal, which it doesn't seem is what you're describing...
