I agree with a few of the above points--while it is certainly no fun to get out dragged by a more modern rice rocket, I definitely prefer taking it easy if someone is trying to race me from a stop--it's hiarious how some people in these distastefully modded out civics replete with F40 Spoiler, Coffee-can of angry hornets sounding grapefruit-shooter exhausts, and "Fast and the Furious" paint schemes reek of attention starvation. At least here in the states, when you 'stroll' up next to him at the next light, everyone is staring at him thinking he has a complex while they admire your P-car...
It is true - I agree with ventoGT. Everyone and their dog around here has a Neon with a super tail spoiler and chrome wheel covers....underbody lights etc. Nobody cares and they don't impress anybody but themselves. My P-car draws appreciative looks everytime I drive it. In the end though, it is not about impressing the neighbours, the Porsche just fits right and it just some much FUN to drive!
How about this for an idea. Refrain from racing them at all. When they pull up revving threr little tinkertoy timebombs, just remember that your car is worth more than theirs, and obviously is more desirable. Your car looks better and is better, that's exactly why they're wanting a piece of you in the first place. A Porsche is intemidating and signifies the ultimate race car on the street. (1) If you race and lose the there goes your image. (2) If you race and win then there are no bragging rights because it is a Porsche and you should have won. (3) If you just pull away slowly then you are still winning because they get no saticfaction and you prove to be baetter mentally by being in a different (better) class.
Just remember they are the ones seeking approval; You already have it. PORSCHE sounds goood.

Thanks Joey Bagadonuts,
It IS a good read, although I have read better on here. No, preachin just sharing and being freindly. If you're really looking for a good laugh though, check out my grammar (spelling). And there's spell check on here.
Duncan is spot on. I don't race the idiots, but if I can sneak up on one, I just blast past and then slow down. They normally go screaming past, but I don't bite. It really pisses them off. They are green with envy, I have a car that makes a statement, and so do they!
Christer, I'm impressed you still remember my car. It spun a bearing in May 2002, but a full bottom-end rebuild was completed at JZ Machtech, and it's been rock solid ever since.
Having driven a 300+ bhp C2 for the last three years, I firmly believe it's about the right level of power & power delivery for everyday use. I rarely find the need to use full throttle to get past or away from anything, especially on public roads.
I've recently driven an Audi RS4 (380bhp, quick shift, H&R suspension), which didn't feel any quicker than my 964. I guess this is due to the extra 300kg the RS4 has to lug around. As Rob mentioned earlier in this thread, I need to replace the 964 with something a bit more family-friendly (e.g. the aforementioned RS4), so I'm seeking a new home for it. Happy to take further enquiries.
Yes, of course I remember. I was speaking to Steve and Jonas around the time it happened..in fact I might have been there when your car was there actually (but you weren't). I love the colour of your car in any case, and what you have done to it. I personally went to 9M to do something a little bit similar earlier this year and I love it, but I am not going to let go of it soon!
If I was in the market for a 964 now, and knowing what I would want to do to it myself - I'd buy yours (subject to PPI of course...haha) Good luck in any case. An RS4 should be fun....
Well, for now I think I'll take the "don't race them" attitude (some of the time anyway). But next summer I'll give more thought about whether to stick with the car as it is, follow Christers example and mod everything except the number plate or look at moving into the turbo league. I realise there is more to the 964 than acceleration - and I also know it's a 15 year old car - but to be honest, I do quite like blasting away from the lights and leaving people behind (or not, in this case).
Regarding some of the comments about Porsche heritage - I must be honest, I couldn't really care less about it. It is impressive - but I didn't grow up wanting a Porsche, and I didn't buy it because of the heritage. I bought it because I thought it would be fun for a while. It is - and having tried it, I'm not sure I'd look at many other makes now. But to be honest, I liked my Supra TT as well and if Japan brought out a car which was better fun (as a whole package) than the 964 at a reasonable price then I'd happily forget the heritage and buy it. I can't see it happening - but I'd be lying if I said the heritage made any difference to what car I buy.
On the other hand of course, the car itself is obviously heavily influenced by that heritage so indirectly of course it plays a part.
I agree. The heritage thing I think you can make as big as you want but I just liked the car and the way it drove way more than other (a lot) more expensive cars I drove at the time. Now I just like it a lot better after 3 years of mods. And I guess that is what its about. Enjoyment. If you enjoy your car and it has 60HP (like a friend with a 356) then thats fine. If you have to have 600hp thats fine. Just enjoy and don't beat yourself up about it (or let others do it)
Wow, such attitudes in here with 911 owners. Funny thing, I saw the same when I was racing my M3 at POC events. Random 911 owner "blah blah blah so your BMW beat my 911 cup car, but what has more heritage?" Is that not the most idiotic statement to make? Well sir, the M3 has a nice track record along with M division of BMW, so what? That heritage didnt seem to help you back at turn 17 when I outbraked and then out accelerated you down the straight. heritage doesnt win races, doesnt pay the bills nor gaurantees bragging rights. heritage simply means you expect Porsche to build the great cars that it does.
Now, 964's are cool and damn good looking cars. But I know in the US of A, there are MANY, Many cars that out perform the 964 for less money used or new. Fact of life.
Dont slam the other guy, just simply enjoy the 911 for the reasons you bought it knowing that unless you are in a TT, there is someone out there who is faster and spent less money to be faster. When I starting hearing the excuses "so what I lost, its a Porsche na na na" reminds me of the image freaks who cant drive.
Not a slam, but just a wake up call to like your car and dont make excuses.
And I guess that is what its about. Enjoyment. If you enjoy your car and it has 60HP (like a friend with a 356) then thats fine. If you have to have 600hp thats fine. Just enjoy and don't beat yourself up about it (or let others do it)
Another pearl ...

But back to Dave's dilemma. Have you considered the 9M Power Package? It's not quite the investment as a supercharger or TT and it may provide that extra bit of performance you're looking for. Also, you could lighten your car and work on your launches. Did you read how Duncan crushed that Dodge Magnum--it is possible!
I've carried out some basic chip, intake and exhaust mods on my car and feel it's good for a 5-second flat, 0-60 run--seriously! So if 9M can produce 285-290hp with some simple bolt on's, I think 700GBP might be all that's required to get your car where you want it to be. Maybe they have a modded car you can test drive?
