Car broke down on the way to service
I left home to drive the 40 miles for the 24K service and after 10 miles the car broke down I came of a roundabout put my foot down and there was a loss of power,I managed to struggle it to a layby where it was still idleing(just) but when I tried to pull away it died completely. My first thought was petrol but 1/4 of a tank dismissed this and i just thought about an article I read in GT1 about the DME relay failure.Great.. stuck in the middle of nowhere I contacted my OPC who and all credit to them sent out a guy with a DME relay replacement it was about a 20 mile journey for the guy!I replaced the relay and it started and carried on my trip to the specialist for the service with no problems.I told the specialist mechanic what happened who said the OLD dme relays are always failing but the new replacement, part no 99361522700 never fails,I checked the one that was taken out of the car and it was indeed the new type which he said never fails.Has anyone had this new type of DME relay fail or is it going to be some crazy intermittent problem?
I will be very gratefull for any advice.

Plug it back in and see if it does it again. Maybe that will answer the question or at least give some idea. At least you will have the new one if you get stuck. Just stay off the busy roads

Considering this morning's weather (North london at least, persistent rain/drizzle) I'd guess at a non-genuine O2 sensor that's being affected by the wet.

you are one of the least fortunate 964 owners I have evre read about. Hope this doesn't put you off another 964..
...btw, is there much fibreglass on this one or can I leave the citation securely packed away...

Take it to bits, I believe the failures are to do with soldering on the internals, when I get a relay that fails, I pop the internals out and have a look, If I can mend it for a spare I usually do, if not its bin time...
After all there's not much to a relay now is there.

Hi,
Strangely mine did the same thing a week before its 24k service . Loss of power which started very ocassionally but got progressively worse until almost no drivability and poor idle etc. naturally it drove fine after i'd trailered it to the specialist. o2 sensor fault had logged but sensor was replaced 5k ago and OP not aftermarket. 993 DME relay was already in the car and made no difference swapping the 944 part back. Car has done 500 miles since service and drives fine. one major poss was the airflow sensor connector, as sensor was reading out of spec but fine after cleaned up and reading back in spec. I too am hoping its not going to reoccurr as had simlar issues 6k ago at which point had the dis belt/caps/rotors and o2 sensor replaced. Flywheel speed reference sensor and cylinder head temp sensor were also future candidates if the problem persisted.
Hopefully you'll have it sorted as like me there's nothing worse than driving along with THAT nagging though in the back of your mind of when/if it'll reoccur

I took the DME relay apart and it looks fine infact it looks pretty new,now I'm not going to panic just yet because the weather was pretty bad it was raining really hard when I broke down and also the car ran fine when I fitted the new relay and also DME relay failure is a bit of a 964 quirk, but you can never get this will it or wont it break down gremlin out of your head untill youve done at least 500 miles can you
