I never would have guessed that getting keys cut would be such a hassle. Ordered a few key blanks off eBay and I thought I'd be in good shape, but now nobody can cut them for me. Home Depot couldn't do it, the place at the mall couldn't do it, even the dealership couldn't do it! I think my next try will be Lowe's, but at this point I'm not too optimistic. Where do you guys get replacement keys made?

I appreciate that things may be different that side of the Atlantic but I also bought a key blank off of eBay and took it in to my local hardware store who cut all sorts of keys for household and car use. He just duplicated an original on to the blank - and didn't even charge me a penny!!! As long as the store has the machine to duplicate the key I'd guess it works with ANY key - there's nothing special about a 964 key.

I was turned down at a store due to the material of the key blank... maybe BS... but I still have two key blanks that I need to cut (I only have one original key... now having posted this I am sure to loose it...).

Let me go to Home Depot or Lowes and see if they will cut it.

It is unusual that things are easier over here than in the US - but I had much the same experience as Dave. I've had two keys cut - one was from a proper blank I got from Type 911 (or somewhere like that). One was from a blank the key shop had - they had to mess about a bit because the "shoulder" of the blank was too far back - but it works fine as a spare.

Nice excuse to go to the UK!!!! I assume they have a couple of pubs in Milton Keynes, or do you have to go down the road Stuckley!

There's more than a few pubs in MK!!! You must know someone in Stewkley otherwise I can't imagine why you would know of it - other than it's great claim to fame as the longest village in the UK.

you need to go to somewhere with an old style cutting machine. HD and Lowes have the newer machines that work with cartridges. You should try a small hardware store or even a locksmith

Ah, that makes sense. I don't think our key cutting places have cartridges. I guess getting a key cut here is easier, but only because we're using 20 year old technology!

You could check the Yellow Pages for an old-time locksmith. That's what I used for my Harley's Barrel type key in the past. I used the dealer for my 944's extra keys. IIRC, it was less than $30 for the key blank, lighted head, and cutting. Of course when I got my 964 and went for some spare keys they had sold all the stuff to a locksmith who comes around twice a week. Just some ideas here.

On another track, does anyone know if they can cut the front hood lock key from the VIN?

The what? I don't have any kind of lock on my front hood (that's the luggage compartment lid right?) - where is yours?

there's a small lock on the lever of the front hood (in the passenger compartment) that your normal key should lock...

Same key as your ignition key (unless you changed yours)... In the US you can get a key with the VIN number... all you need is proof of ownership, vin number and an authorzide dealer.

In my case since the car was an import from Sweeden I have no such luck...
