Question 993 brakes for 964?

I have been searching the list for info on Turbo brakes, Big Reds, etc. Looks like any of the "super brakes" cost a "super price". With the danger of being labeled a "Poseur". I am interested in adding some 4 piston calipers with drilled rotors. It is primarily an appearance thing as I don't track the car and probably never will.

Based on the info I've read, I can hardly justify the price of Big Reds.

As an alternative does anyone know if the 993 4 piston Calipers will work on the 964?

I was thinking of powder coating them either red or yellow. I think with the cup wheels the look would be really nice, and I wouldn't expect performance to suffer either.

Just considering some alternatives...

The 964 brakes are fine as is, but who is really ever satisified with as is... right?

You need an adapter to mount 993 brakes to the front of a 964.

If you only want a cosmetic change, why not simply powder coat or paint the 964 brakes you have? It will be cheaper and easier. Do a search on the 993 board, lots of past discussions there abut painting or powder coating calipers.

Do a search on this forum, as I've posted what's required to run 993 brakes on a 964, which is what I have. Also, there was a brake option summary in the March PCA Pano article "964 Track Preparation". Any questions, let us know!

Bill,
I''ve checked the March 2004 Pano article. That's been helpful.... THANKS!

Howver, I've searched and searched for the write up on Rennlist and can't seem to find it. Can you give me some more direction or possibly a link to it?

So far - It looks like what I need to do is get the 4 piston rear calipers from a 93-94 C@/C4, or make the decision to change to the 993 style calipers.

I would really like to see your article on what's involved to use the 993 calipers.

Thanks a lot for your help!!

Marshall,

Here's the link. See my note about half way down the page. In that discussion (not an article), I don't believe I mentioned that you need a pair of adaptors for the front rotors, which are a standard item sold by various performance tuners. No adaptors required in back. So, parts needed are 993 front and rear calipers, front rotors, and front caliper adaptors. Since rubber brake lines should be replaced every 10+ years, if you don't know when they were last replaced, now is a good time. Assuming an understanding of working on brake systems, no special instructions, beyond perhaps torques, are needed. The rear calipers do requires an extended 10mm hex tool to go through the swing arm to get to the lower caliper bolt. Sears doesn't carry it. You can order one (I got mine from Performance Products, but others carry them too) or craft your own.

Going to the rear 4 piston calipers and a 55 bar bias valve will upgrade your brakes to the C4 or 92+ C2 configuration.

C4's for all years have 4 piston brakes. C2's had two piston rear brakes 90-91 (fronts are 4 piston), and 4 piston all the way around 92+.

Bill,
Thanks again for the advice. I think I may troll around a bit to see if I can find some 993 or C4 calipers for the rear to replace the 2 piston units. Unless I come across a great deal for all 4 wheels, that may be all I do for a bit.

I noticed in one of your threads that you have put a front spoiler/splitter on your 911. The post was from a couple years ago, and the pictures wouldn't come up. I am in the process of purchasing an FVD front spiltter, but thought the one you mentioned sounded interesting (RUF I think?) Any chance you could post or email a pic so that I can see what it looks like?

Thank you for your help!
