I'll happily sell you one for under £400 - shall we call it £399?

Well Dave,

John came around to see me today, and bought the tester to try on my 964, Iain S came along to see if there are any differences in the way a C4 is handled.

So far I would say so good, it reads the codes ok, and is well on the way to being the ideal replacement for the more expensive hammer. But as John has pointed out it may well need some software upgrades to be as purposefull as the Hammer.

Summary:- Damn fine job, easy to use, small enough to be portable.

keep up the good work John, I'll probably be up to see how things are progressing soon.

Kevin.

Seconded - thanks John for trying out the gizmo on our cars - it pulled down the ECU codes fine and proved I had problems with my knock sensors. All I have to do now is fix the faults and meet up again to get the hammer codes cleared! (PS Can someone repost a picture of where the knock sensors are as I need to check the connections on them, and the previous posts in the archive no longer have pictures in them)

All in - an impressive piece of work by John and to be highly commended. As said, it still needs some more work on the 964's as John has been mainly able to try it on 928's, but with our help I think he will get there.

Hello Dave R., Kevin and iain - here is a short progress report on the "Spanner" as it has been Christianed.

The 928 only version was launched late last year, and has been selling well.

A prototype with the "all models" software is being evaluated by a Porsche Specialist on the South Coast - he seems pretty pleased with it, in fact he wants to buy it ! I am also considering loaning a unit to another specialist for his feedback.

Shortage of time has prevented me from getting all the feedback I would like.

I had hoped that the tester would read all PDAS fault codes, but it appears this may not be possible with the current software. For the 964 it does read DME fault codes and clear them and also heater fault codes, also, actuator tests, idle adaptation..

Regards

John,

Congratulations on your success so far!

Will the tester also provide readouts from selected sensors, for example the cylinder head temperature sensor and the air temperature sensor (in the air flow meter)?

On your website you refer to cars equipped with a "digital dash", do you mean cars equipped with a digital display on the dash? (Do all 964s have a "digital dash"?)

Regards,

Hi Dave,
No, these are available with the "Hammer" which can communicate in real time with the DME, but not with my tester.

When I started the development of the Spanner, I didn't have access to a Hammer, and so the design is based on the earlier 9268 tester

See the History of Diagnostics on my website http://www.jdsporsche.com/faq2.html

I now have several "Hammers", and the hardware of the Spanner is fully functional for Hammer functions.

In the meantime I have spent almost £10k on software, and need to recoup some of this to contemplate the investment to upgrade to full Hammer compatability.

Regards
