Default Brake sensor light!

Following the last time I removed my pads (to add anti sqeal) I got about a mile before the sensor came on. I drove home, reseated all the sensors (one was not properly seated and had come loose) and replaced the wheels. The light remained on. I Kicked myself for not testing BEFORE I replaced the wheels and have just lived with the light.

I decided this weekend as I had the car on jacks to flush the transmission and do the oil change, that I would simply remove ALL the sensors to get rid of the annoying light, which I did. Problem is that the light has remained on even though I have now removed all the pad sensors! Are there any connections that are a likely culprit to cause this? Anyone else becoming annoyed with their sensor light?

Howard,

When you say you removed the sensors, did you tie together the remaining wires at each wheel? The light goes on in response to a break in the circuit. At each wheel, I removed the sensors, soldered the wires together, used some heat shrink tubing on it, done!

No Bill, I just Unplugged the sensors entirely and threw them away! With no sensors plugged in will the light stay on?

Damn, now I'll have to buy new ones if this is the case! I shoulda saved the old!! Seems awful to do although I guerss they are only like $7 each. I know - anyone replacing brakes and sensors please donate used ones! LOL!

Howard, they are Porsche parts. The sensors are about $20 each. It's not too late to dig through the trash...

Tom, they are actually much less, around $7 each I think the last time I ordered them.

Like I said I DONT WANT them - I have had the sensors fail on both my cars in error and it can be a tad annoying . I will take Bills advice and close the circuit, I just find it difficult to destroy a perfectly good new sensor when a broken old one would have done just as well for the modification!

I'll get out the rubber gloves....

call Partsheaven to see if they've got some laying around... or even your dealer??? I doubt the dealer would help... but worth a try?

Jason, there is no question about the price. Like I said they are about $7, Thanks for posting though....!

It was merely a passing comment that I hate to buy new ones in order to cut and solder the wires, when I could have just modded the ones I threw away!

TBO I am surprised that the light is on when NO sensors are plugged in. When I got the car I recall that the sensor was missing on one side and there was no light on! If one was cracked or got caught in the rotor (happened on my mercedes last time the dealer changed the pads) I can understand..

The reason that your light came on is that you now have an open circuit. The sensors make a circuit that the computer sees. When the sensor's capsule wears down and the wire inside with grounds out against the rotor or wears through opening the circuit and letting the computer knwo your pads are worn. I'm sure that someone will correct me if I got this screwed up.

Craig, thats what Bill said above. My point is that its annoying that if there is NO sensor that the fault is still generated. I will root through the trash today and find the old sensors to make a dummy.

Thanks,

Hi All

I found that the circuit can still be complete and the sensor light will still come on if the circuit finds its way to ground. The way I discovered this is that after installing new pads and sensors everything was OK (i.e. no sensor light came on) but one of the wires between the 2 sensors on each wheel was rubbing against the inside wheel rim and wore through the insulation and hence found its way to ground. If there is a short to gound even beyond the sensor wires the sensor light will come on.

Hope this helps
Bill
