To register a car on classic plates it's the standard registration fee plus like $50 for a standard classic plate and $100 for a classic vanity plate.
You generally want to go to one of the big DMVs when you register because the smaller annexes don't have classic plates in stock to give to you.
Once you have a standard plate, vanity plates are done in an archaic way where you have to mail in a form listing your top 4 choices along with a check and then wait months to see which plate arrives in the mail.

By state law, having classic plates means that the assessed value of the car is automatically set to $500.
So I pay something like $12 a year in property taxes on each of my cars with classic plates.
That's like 1% the property tax on my daily driver.

Great info, thanks. I have three classic-plate 911s registered in CT and, honestly, never really look at the tax bills. I see the total, but never try to figure it out. At the margin, this makes me think I should sell my newer cars and hold older cars.

I did know about the personalized plate issue, which seems stupid, but everything in CT government seems stupid.

that’s all great and helpful info.
And it also makes me want to look for more cars 20 years or older for my kids lol the property tax on newer cars is nuts.
