Replacing Oil Level Sender
All,
I need to replace my oil level sender which is sending false signals...
I am happy with how to do this but am not sure whether I need to do an oil change at the same time in case any small grit particles fall into the oil tank when I remove the old unit. Presumably any oil entering the engine from the tank goes through the filter first???
I guess I know the answer to this but given the car has just been serviced I am not keen on binning new oil unnecessarily....

Seems to me that if you clean the area around the drain plug thoroughly and drain the oil into a clean container before you start the work, you could reuse it.
Mind you, it's easy to say that when it's someone else's engine.
P.S. In what way is the sender misbehaving?

There is no need to drain the oil tank before you replace the sender. With oil at room temperature it will take nearly 4 1/2 quarts to raise the oil level to the bottom of the opening for the oil level sender. Write this number down as it will be VERY handy if you happen to accidentally pull the non-magnetic oil level float out of its hook when removing the old sender and then need to fish the thing out of the tank.
All you need to do is thoroughly clean the area around the opening. Oil travels from the filter to the tank and then to your motor not from the tank to the filter.

Passenger side, rear wheel well forward. There is a plate secured with 4 screws and a cable coming out.... The cable connects inside behind the air filter box and fuel filter....

I don't have a pic, but I can tell you that you can't easily trace it from inside the wheel-well. The wire runs behind the oil line hoses and the hole into the engine bay is behind them as well. A small mirror wouldn't hurt when looking for it from inside the engine bay.

If memory serves, the wire follows the oil lines in the fender well but then goes through a grommet into the engine compartment. The connector is under the power steering reservoir.
