964 Tip stuck in Manual

964 Tip stuck in Manual
My tip is a non runner (crank no start), but fired briefly with the aid of easy start spray. My next task to try to resolve this was to change the fuel filter, however when moving the transmission from P to N (to push the car forwards for better access to engine), I accidentally knocked the lever to the manual side. Now it won't go back to the auto side, but it does move forwards and backwards. The car speedo shows as N and the car can be moved, but the lever will not return and hence it wont crank at all now.
Any help or suggestions welcome.

Take the cover off. The button in the center of the shifter unscrews you then can pull the **** off that allows the cover to be removed. Something in there is mucking up the mechanism. It can’t hurt.

You have to remove the center console I don’t off hand remember the steps but I do know I googled it and was sent to a Rennlist for the answer. It wasn’t hard. the last poster was correct about the amount of junk that can collect in there

Agreed it's likely crap in there and the foam washer has broken down. There are several threads on Rennlist on the steps to remove the center console, although be forewarned - you'll likely break the clips for the center console switches if they aren't broken already (and also a number of threads on the different options to repaiir the switch plates).
The long term fix for crap in the shifter to that is to replace the tip shift selector bezel with a shift boot from a manual car, as detailed here:

I found for my Tip a matching Marine Blue boot at Autobahn from a Singer donor, really upgrades the interior.
I've also had the shift lock solenoid fail on my car, which locked it into neutral. There is a really good article in this link detailing how the Tip shifter locks work:

Solved
I managed to solve this issue at the weekend. In case it helps someone else here is how. I removed the sector gate after taking off the selector **** (unscrew button and pull off) and then unscrewed the centre console to be able to lift it enough to remove the gate from under the console. With the gate removed you have full visibility of the selector mechanism and all the disintegrated foam. With the foam removed I could see the selector lever was misaligned with the mechanism for the auto side. The car was showing as N and the lever only moves across in D, so using a screw driver I inserted it and pulled the auto mechanism towards me from N to D, this allowed the selector lever to move back across to the auto side. The selector then moved fine and the car once again cranked over once I'd reassembled it.
Now back to the original crank no start issue which I have now determined is on the fuelling side with the help of some easy start spray. The plan is to swap the filter and then pump after I've give it a thump or 2.
I also want to thank everyone for their suggestions for helping..much appreciated.
