993 vs 964
#2
Well, I love the look of 993s - and I know they're newer so less should go wrong, and they are cheaper to service.
On the other hand (at least in the UK) a decent 993 costs about 50% more than a decent 964. And nobody is going to convince me that it's 50% better.
So I'll stick with my 964.

I like both... i have a 964 but i like to have a 993 because of the engine (less maintenance) little bit more power.. and i like the style of the car ... the interior is the same as in the 964 cars... my favorit is my car ( :-) ) and a 993 s4 in black or silver...

There is not much between them in performance, so I guess it boils down to which model you prefer looks-wise. 964's will probably cost a little more to run though. Well worth it just for the superior noise the 964 makes IMHO (and I am talking standard here, we all know both models can be made to sound better with all sort of mods).

The search function is your friend... this has been discussed to death here and in the 993 forum.
Depends on what is your budget and so so so many subjective factors...
I have owned both and love the 993. 964 is more raw when compared with the 993. Both are great cars and you can't go wrong with either one.
If I had to buy another one today it would be a difficult decision... I want to try to keep my 964 and look into buying a 993 in a couple of years.

While both the 964 and 993 are much more refined in nature that the previous generation 911's, the 993 adds an improved rear suspension, additional transmission gear (for the manual trans), much more simple AWD workings and of course more hp and torque than the 964 models.
Performance increases for the 993 are noticeable on paper, but did not seem appearant to me during test drives of 993's as compared to the 964 that I have (and as noted above). The 993 is definitely quieter and more refined than the 964.
If I was on a budget and wanted the most bang for the buck, I'd search out a well sorted 964 or an early 993. The '97 and '98 993 models are probably the best of the last air cooled 911's every built. All the bugs were worked out by then for the 993 line and depreciation is very minimal given the cars age and original price tag. 1993 and 1994 964's (if you can find them) also are very solid cars and tend to bring a premium over the early 964's.
Looks are subjective, so that's best answered only by yourself.

It gets tiresome with all personal opinions, so here are some facts:
The 993 front looks good and the *** looks good, but they just don't mix together very well. The 964 is much more stylish, especially with the original D90 rims and flag mirrors, which gives it a classic, clean gentlemanlike look.
The best looking 911:s are however the old long hood cars. The second best looking are the 964:s (with D90:s and flag mirrors - never, EVER mix flag and cups or vice verse). Third on the list are the G-series (impact bumper, accordion-style) cars, in fourth place comes the 996 and in fifth and last the 993. It's as simple as that.

Another fact: To me, the 993 is looking dated... All the other series (long hood, impact bumper and 964) have a classic, timeless look.
I'm sure the 993 guys will be over here kicking our asses in short order...

When the 993 came out, it improved the 0-60 mph time by 0.1s (5.5 to 5.4), top speed was up from 162 to 167. The 96+ VRAM knocked another 0.1s off the 0-60 mph time, and added 4 mph to the top end. Factory numbers that I'm reciting off the top of my head (that is, I should really check my references, first ).
Anyway, as Christer has already pointed out, performance improvements with the 993 were rather modest. Unlike the 964 compared to the 3.2 Carrera, where the changes (eg., 0-60 improved by 0.6s, top end up by 13 mph) were significant and obvious.

Hmmm. They are very similar in most respects.
I do find that I like the looks of the 993 more (a personal choice). I also prefer the 6-speed gearbox of the 993 to the 5-speed in the 964. It's a tougher comparison for me as my 993 has the RS LWF and clutch and shorter gears while the transmission of my 964 is stock. As they are currently configured, my 993 is quicker but not by a lot.
When I was looking for the track car, I found the 993's to be about 30% more money.

993 vs 964 aesthetics are a personal choice: De gustibus, non disputandum est.
The 993 is quieter due to heavier exhaust muffling (bad!) and there is less road noise because of isolation of the rear suspension from the body (good).
I think the 993 headlights are far better than the US (H5) 964 headlights, though still not fantastic.
Power is very similar, but the '96 and later 993 are more tractable in traffic because of the better low end torque.
I made the switch to a 993 because I liked the looks better, hated the 964 headlights, and wanted one of the last of the air-cooled Porsches.
A nice 964 C2 is definitely a fantastic bang for the buck, though.
