As I understand, non-US C4s were not delivered with the green PDAS activation lamp installed, so I wonder if retrofitting the respective lamp on a 1990 RoW C4, would make it work right away? – It would be so much more convenient to have the activation displayed in front of me and not somewhere down at the tunnel...

Yes it will. There are several threads on the subject - just requires a bulb.

Just tried it with my '90 RoW C4 and I don't see any electrical connections on the board connecting a bulb.

 

I added a bulb to mine prior to doing a centre console delete, moved all the buttons to the dash.

It actually comes on quite a lot when driving.
The roads in the UK are not the best, so any potholes or change in surface, sets off the traction lamp.

My C4 is a 1990 registered 1st October 1989, ROW car too, I thought this might have been the reason why my car has the contacts in the gauge for this...
But as your car is also a 90 ROW I guess that's not the reason...

 

I did it on my 90 C4 (oct 90, 91 year model), and it works. Really easy to do
