Default First 964 in CHINA???

Hi,

I joined a charity drive organised by the classic car club HK and drove to the People's Republic of CHINA on the 1st of May last Staurday.

Together were some oldies like 365s and VWs MGs Mers etc. Since the establishment for selling P-car was only set up last year and I would imagine that there were no 964 ever been to China before, I could have been the 1st 964 in China!!

I am trying to see if I can attach the photo or someone may help me to do so. ( If you cannot see the photo)

Cheers!

Eddie

...and what a FINE example to use when you are "964 Ambassador of China".

What color is that?? ...with the flash/lighting, I may be wrong, is it Coral Red or some other version of Red?? Nice color from the photo, nice car, LOVE the Cup II wheels!

I'm not sure I have your question right.

Are you asking if you were the first 964 into China? If so, no way. Stacks of 964's have been driven to Zhuhai track over the years. Also Porsche Club HK has had drives into China into the past, departing from HK and I would be sure some of the cars would have been 964's. Maybe check with Janice at PCHK. She handles the track day and China drives for the club so she should know.

I also suspect that there has been some importing (private) of Porsches into China over the years although I can't confirm this. I seem to remeber seeing a 993 pict. somewhere in Beijing. Could be wrong but!

Thanks! I knew it was too good to be true! ( halt all other pics and showing off!!!)

Nevertheless, driving around in China is such a mixed experience; we drove in two days and through a few counties and in the begining we had Police escort and they stopped all the traffic and let us go through RED lights.( I could not belive that at all!!! It 's jsut complete MADNESS ). When we were in some part of China without Police escort, some of the other drivers come close to us and tried to take a closer look of our cars, that caused some very very nevrous dangerous encounters. In a couple of occasions, we were stopped and I thought we had accidents, tensions were running high and There is no doubt that the Chinese is the worst drivers in the world ( Can anyone challange this??)

Jeff, you are right, mine is H82 Coral Red Metallic.
Thanks Arjan, the locals were amazed about the raising rear wing and there knowledge about Porsche's air-coll boxer engine is very little. Many found it difficult to believe that the engine is in the rear.

Anyway, I thought some people would like to know...

Cheers!

Hi Eddie,

Not sure about the truth of this, only hearsay, but I have heard that there have been several very bad accidents with Ferrari and P-cars in China.

Something about wild animals crossing the amazing freeway system they are developing. Also problems with locals just wandering across the roads unable to judge the speed of these cars, and some poor road conditions leading to bottomed out low flying vehicles.

Watch out on those China drives, they can be very dangerous.

I know when I've been over to Zhuhai, rules are often ignored and logic...well...what logic.

Once when we went for racing, we got to the Shenzen border and had to get out of the 4x4 so they could stock up on race supplies so we jumped into a 'taxi' for the run across to Zhuhai. At first I couldn't work out why we never stopped at tollbooths. Eventually I found out the driver had PLA plates on the car and no-one stops the military, not even the police. This was is some dumpy Toyota Crown type thing and we were bouncing up and down over the slighest bumps at 140km/h. It was pretty scary!

More photos please!

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,

we are neighbours actually, I saw your car frequently in the estate. pity you sold it.

You can say that agaain about driving in China, I would not dream to drive there by myself. The trip was sponsored by the Chinese Commercial Bank so I suppose a lot of protection from the local authorities. Even so, we were told very clearly that we ought to stay within a group and no venture out by yourself. Having said that I saw more accidents in two days' trip in China than the whole year back in Hong Kong. I have driven in US, Canada, most of Europe and Austrlia/New zealand and South Africa. Before I came back to work in HK, I thought Italy was quite challanging but than HK is more difficult but comparing to China...., HK is actually very very good place to drive around.

However, the classic car club is planning to drive to Shanghai later this year. Yes, all the way from HK to Shanghai. Would u be interested?

I had difficulties posting pic so may be a new topics?

I did join the P-club drive once a couple years ago but it was early on Sunday am and crashed with my other schedule. May be I should try again.

You will get another Porsche, it just so much fun !

happy motoring

Eddie,

I would give my right nut to do the Shanghai trip. That would be a once in a lifetime trip for me. I think the HKAA is organising the same trip for the first F1 event in China. What a buzz that would be.

Unfortunately I will have left HK by then. I'm off to sunny LA (California) for the next few years. Hope to buy a 964 that I can strip and backdate.

Cheers
