Hi,

My 964 has a 100,000 mile engine with top end rebuild including new barrels, pistons and full head job at 80,000 and since then running Mobil 1 0-40. That is all we can buy in my area - possibly we could order the heavier weight but I did not give it a thought. The oil pressure is fine 2-3 bar at hot idle and generally 5 bar at all driving speeds and engine runs cool.

Two weeks ago went to Northern Territory - no speed limits and in 33deg C day (what's that in F?) sat on 200 KPH / 124mph for about 2 hours and never got above the first low line on the temp gauge. Speed and hot days do not cause a problem BUT slow traffic in the dity does - on the way back we came through Melbourne and in peak hour traffic the temperature got half way up the scale at average 10kph / 6mph speed. Simple minded conclusion - speed is cool for 964's.

Also, engine is absolutely dry EXCEPT for very slight weeping on one side cylinder heads - shades of my older 911. No other leaks at all.

Only time will tell whether the oil is good but manufacturers muck-ups aside - like the 964 leaks and heads issues etc - most engines should last a long time. It seems the days of A model Fords are long gone - my father fondly tells of de-cokes every three months and ring jobs every year.

My conclusion - with synthetics the oil industry has caught up with top quality auto manufacturers and engine oil is no longer a weak link.

Michael...WHERE is your "AREA"??

Just a hint for people to fill out their profile...you can say Va. -or- Virginia Beach, Va. either way, it's nice to know where people are from.

MY POINT?? You mentioned that only Mobil 1 0W-40 is available in your area, so that made me curious!

91.4 F - not too hot, but I'll bet you ran the AC! Northern Territory is in Australia?

I agree with Jeff - it would be nice if more folks would fill out the location block on their posting form.

Good info but isn't that for a different thread?

I've used a variety of oils: Royal Purple, Mobil1 and Mobil Drive Clean. I look for the heaviest weight available since I often track my car and compare consumption between different brands. The consumption for Drive Clean (high-mileage blend) looked good until I took it out to the track. Then it acted like the rest: 1 qt/1000 miles.

Try the Motul brand. My mechanic says Ferrari uses it and it does make my engine sing quite springly.

I just put in Redline 15W-50... because I was out of Amsoil 20W-50 Racing oil. I'll also keep an eye on consumption.

Did you know that "boil off" is a significant cause of consumption? Supposedly these "high end" synthetics have very low boil-off rates, compared to cheaper syns, or dino oil.

What's boil off?

When the engine leaks oil onto the heat exchangers and it goes up in a plume of smoke?

I'm no expert, but this is a statement I found on the Amsoil website:

"Vaporization - Conventional motor oils tend to "boil off" in high temperatures. Losing up to 25 percent of their original weight in high temperature service, vaporized oils grow thick and heavy. They circulate poorly, reduce fuel efficiency and contribute to excessive emissions and engine wear. Of course, oil consumption skyrockets as oil boils off."

I'm another for Mobil1 15w-50. I asked the previous owner what he used and decided to stick with the same. However, I've only had to put 1/2 litre in over 2500 miles...

I'm putting in OW40 Mobil 1. It gets a little pricey at $ 4.78 a quart but I guess thats good insurance. The previous owner used nonsynthetic oil.

Mobil 1 full synthetic on the 993 since that's what Porsche recommends and since I track the car.

Valvoline full synthetic has gone into most of my other vehicles since it's a bit cheaper and since I tend to run hard and fast on the road.

I've heard great things about Royal Purple...apparently the late Dale Earnhardt ran the stuff in his race engines and spend $25K a year buying it because he thought it was worth it. My friend sold the stuff about 2 years ago and swears by it...anyone else use it?
