0W 40 Mobil 1 full synthetic.
Full synthetic oil used in the transmission and front differential as well.
Fully synthetic oils were approved for the 964 from 1989. ROW versions were delivered with Shell FSO. US versions were delivered with Dino oil until August 1992.

non-synthetic 20W-50. I thought Porsche recommended synthetic for 993 and on...
I really don't think I'll hurt my motor by running non-synthetic. Been using penzoil 20W-50 in my 911's for 15 years now...if I had a 993 I'd use the synthetic if that's what the car came with

I use a wide range oil, 0W40 oil from Total [France] Same specifications as Mobil 1 0W40. Good stuff, good oil pressure, lower fuel consumption, clean engine.
I would advise Mobil 1 for everyone. the extreme hot countries will need a 10W60 or a 15W50 oil because of the hot climate. Europe is a great area for 0W40 oil.

I just bought a case of Mobil 1 0W40 a few weeks ago as they had it for the first time at my local auto parts. Wondered if I should stick with the 5W30 due to occasional hot summer temps (its generally fairly cold here in Pacifica and in San Francisco where I work however)?

Howard, I use 15-50 and not lower 0-40 as our temps with lows in the 40's during the winter really don't require a lower viscosity oil. The high temps of 100 or more in the summer (especially at the track) warrant the 15-50. [On the coast where Howard and I live the avg high temp in Jan is about 58 and the avg high temp in July is about 68 - but if you go inland summer highs of 100+ are frequent. It does not frost or freeze here.]

I used 5W 30 and now 0W 40 all year round. We had our hottest dummer in decades last summer and I was stuck in a number of traffic jams and the oil cooler system worked perfectly and I had no hot oil problems at all. In winter when it drops to -15C no problems starting and oil heats up reasonably quickly.
By the way for those who seem to think that synthetics are not associated with 964s then please read the Technical Service Bulletins issued from 1989 onwards. Plus keep in mind all 964s except American ones were delivered with synthetic oil, Shell actually.

Howard, no not too low - just fine for normal Bay Area driving. However, I would change it before going to someplace like Thunderhill where the track temperature is often 100+ and you are pushing the car hard.
