Crack in dash, easily repairable?
Hi all,
Usually over in the 991 forum, but am close to purchasing a 1991 C4 coupe, first delivered to Japan. It is a left-hand drive optioned 5speed. Seller overseas has sent me pictures of this cracked dash and I'm wondering how I'm going to fix this.
Thanks for any advice, they are handling all shipping and customs so that is all sorted. Otherwise, the car looks great to me, tons of records (although in Japanese) and being sold on a reputable site.

It's far from uncommon (especially here in the dry climates) to have a cracked dashboard, but I don't think I've ever seen one crack in one place all the way from front to back. Anyhow, you can get it recovered and I would recommend that over a second-hand replacement as they will just crack again and buying a new one is around $2500 I believe - you can recover and make it look nice (leather, double stitching instead of the factory vinyl) for far less.

I agree with Tarek's advice, and you could use the opportunity to reupholster (and match) other parts like the door panels or lower dash.
Alternatively, check craigslist or other sites; every now and then somebody offers a used dash for sale. The used ones may not be perfect but they're unlikely to have such a big visible crack dead center. I've seen them <$1000 a few times.
Good luck and congrats.

WOW! That is a big ask! I understand this is a rare piece that someone in need would happily pay for. But my container shipping + customs agent fees from NL to Houston total $1,900. To ship an entire car. Across an ocean. I have a bad feeling this is going tobe a slippery slope.
Quick question about coilovers, KW V3's do not show a C4 in their "sub-model" to choose. The car I'm purchasing is a ROW 91 C4. Any other options?
Thanks

these are old cars. they are not cheap cars.
some of the parts are unobtanium, the dash is one of those, the factory part is $, and the new production does not typically fit as well.
A shop like Tarek recommends is the way to go. Recover existing. 964 dash is not hard to remove.

You don't want a dash cover its plastic uhg .. Recovering can be nearly as bad it depends on who does it , it's not to difficult to find a decent replacement dash used in good shape but they are pricey $400-$600 .
Take yours out and plug the replacement in viola , depends how annoyed you become with the crack haha, Bert
