A friend has some 993 gauges he wants to sell me, and my glass is a little foggy on the gas/oil level and oil temp/pressure gauges (probably from the car living in Florida heat most of its life). My question is can I simply change the gauges out with his 993 gauges? Will they work, and will the readings/accuracy be the same? The gauges look exactly the same to me...

I 'm not sure about switching gauges but i have been told that you can remedy the foggy gauges by taking the lens off and peeling off the plastic film on the glass. Good luck HSB

I think they look exactly alike. I didn't know if the oil level/fuel level readings would be the same for instance, or if all the warning lights will work the same. I guess if anyone had access to parts codes for the 5 individual gauge clusters (well, 4- I wouldn't change my speedometer), that would help if the code was the same for 964 and 993's.

i read your post over on the 993 board.
going just by the part numbers in the PET for the 993 instruments, only the fuel/oil level combination gauge, and the basic tach for man. trans. models have a 964 part number. all the others have a 993 prefix. whether the difference is cosmetic or internal or both for each of the other guages...i do not know.
check your PM box. i sent you a scan of the part number list.

i did the reverse of what you planned.....i bought gauges for a 993 that had 964 part numbers .

so, i may have a set of 964 guages (with OBC) for sale at some point in the future.
i will let the board know and do a rennlist classified at that time; before trying the ebay thing.

Max- I replied with a private message. I guess now I have to figure out if the oil pressure/level cluster and clock can be interchanged. I wonder if the dealership would know, or if they would simply tell me "the part number changed" if they have a part number book that would give any updated part numbers for a 1993 car...

The clock for the 964 (part # 964.641.701.00) was replaced with the 993 part # 993.641.701.00, I didn't see the same update for the oil pressure gauge.

I'm getting there- Eric, if you're saying the clock will work, and max has pretty much figured out that the oil/gas level and tach are OK, just one more to go- the oil temp/pressure. Everyone has been a great help! I don't want to pull these out and replace them to find they aren't the right ones- doesn't seem like a fun job

Yes, the clock will work. They pop right out, it's not a bad job..... after you get the first gauge out, the others are really easy.

One point on the clock :

I replaced mine soon after I got the car. I remember my mechanic telling me at the time that the part numbers were different for C2 and C4 clocks. He couldn't say why, since they appear the same. If it's true, it might be something to bear in mind.

Is there a 4-wheel drive related light in the clock? Maybe there's no bulb for it in the c2 unit vs. c4 or something...

Should I buy new rubber "gaskits" that hold the units in place? Mine seem to be mint, but I didn't know if these get damaged when pulling the unit out..

I've not had to replace my gaskets when replacing my instruments - they won't get damaged unless you are cack-handed (and if I can do it w/o damaging them- anyone can). Top tip on replacing them is to put a little washing up liquid around the edge of the gasket - not too much - it helps greatly slide the thing back in.....

I changed out my fuel / oil level guage with one from a 993 - no problems at all.

PS - the soap trick is the money.

PPS - I have a little gizmo for opening paint cans - it got a little hook on the end and no sharp corners and it's the biz for getting the gauges out.

Not to get too technical, but I still wonder if the oil level gauge will be accurate....the 993 may have a different size oil holding tank, or the sending signal may "calculate" differently in a 993 making that gauge non-accurate... Speaking of that, maybe the gas tank is a different size too. My guess would be that a part from an outside vendor (VDO in this case) would be less likely to change as it might be easier for porsche to manipulate the sending signal going to the individual gauges, but what do I know
