Ground strap madness - dbfd
My ground strap on my car is gross. I don't have a picture for you, not yet at least, but it's no different than any of the other nasty ground straps I've seen on 964 driven in wet and snow...they look pretty much like the Statue of Liberty...
And as we know...she has this saying, even though she has never spoken...
"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore."
But in keeping with this, our man from Guilford, bought himself a new ground strap, and i cooked up a way to take his tired poor refuse and add it to my huddled masses of old parts, that can help many a 964 along the road...he passes me his, i make a silly madness thread, put the refreshed one on my car, and renovate mine to pass to the next and so on....essentially we always have one to swap out. Small thing, but nice to have. So many thanks for that Rus!
Now on to the reason for my existence...or rather my madness...and I'm sorry his strap was in such good shape to begin with, but you will get the point...but here is what was passed to me:
And so I start by tossing it in my ultrasonic tank- and keep in mind here that if i used a nastier degreaser or solvent first, the cosmoline and grime would have come off better to begin with and my results would be "even better"...but for this type of thing, doesn't have to be perfect.
Next - out of the tank- clean:
And then- the bucket i will never be without for the remainder of my days- Evaporust - this product is magic.
In it goes:
And then the magic just begins here. Leave it over night...and take it out and soap and a toothbrush to remove the evaporust...
All kinds of bright and shiney. Now the little bugger will conduct well enough to do its job. And the madness ends...
But here is the thing- moreso than doing this to show how awesome my newly renovated five dollar ground strap is- because really- THIS ISNT WORTH YOUR TIME....just sayin...
But - but - for anything brass, steel, copper zinc etc on the car, if you want to remove the oxidation, without making a negative impact on the underlying metal, this is how you do it. Vinegar tends to work well, as i have shown in other threads, but it's a light acid, so if you leave the metal in there a long time, it eats the metal, and we don't want that in most cases.
So aside from improving the electrical conductivity of an oxidized ground strap, keep a bucket of evaporust in the garage and toss bolts and rusty parts in overnight (or longer) to make them new and functional again. Try it, you'll like it.

I love such madness and am now minorly ashamed I didn't do this before giving it to you but sometimes one has shamanistic practices in trying to diagnose strange cold start issues.
