Odd ball Cup 1 wheel
I'm doing a 964 Targa budget restoration ("964 Targa - 10 years in the desert"). As part of the redo I picked up a set of factory Cup 1 wheels that need to be refinished. They were quite inexpensive and today - while getting them ready for refinishing - I might have discovered one of the reasons. One of the wheels has the hole for the valve in the wrong place.

Well - I thought it could be a fake but the inside looks quite authentic. I also thought maybe the wheel had been repaired and somehow the hole was relocated. However - there's no evidence of that either.

So much for QC/QA. Yeah valve stem was drilled in the wrong location. A true Porsche oddity.

Cup 1 wheels are cast, the width and offset marking are cast into wheel. Someone drilled valve stem hole in wrong location. I've owned many fuchs wheel with similar type defects but never seen a cup 1 like that

Well I'm not going to complain. The set was $200 with the factory center caps. Anybody have any information about restoring the Porsche crest in the center caps? They look to be baked enamel but most are faded. The crest is a separate piece that can be removed from the cap. I'm planning to have the wheels stripped and powder coated silver. I've heard some say it's more accurate to have them painted but I think the powder coating is more durable. Thoughts?

I don't like powder coat. It easily cracks and then water gets between the hard outer surface and the wheel promoting corrosion. I rarely see them done correctly. I lean towards paint and have been trying cerakote lately. The cpas can be restored. They are painted and the red especially wears off. I found a toyota color that has the similar look as factory but don't recall the color. I will look it up when i have a chance. I float the paint into the area and it comes out looking like new. Although I carefully tape it off first and send them with the wheels for paint to color match before repairing.

I thought about removing the crests and having the caps done while restoring the crest separately. A bit worried about damaging the little studs on the back of the crest though. Upon closer inspection - these might not be factory caps. They have a patent number on them and I don't recall a factory center cap that bolted to the wheel. A couple of the crest are slightly loose so I thought I might be able to get them off.

For what it's worth, I've had at least 32 wheels powder coated, including 12 Cups 1's, and I've never seen one crack. I've seen poor finishes (orange peel like from poor prep) but haven't experienced anything less durable than paint, which in my experience, chips too easily.
