50,000 mile service coming up: what do you all recommend I do?
I've got about 1100 miles until I reach the mark (got about 3 months to go). Here's what I am planning on doing. If I am missing anything, please let me know. My car has a peacemeal past history, but runs perfectly.
oil & filter change with Mobil 1 - car has had dino oil in past - OK to change to sythetic?
fuel and air filter change
brake fluid and PDAS system fluid change (will have to have the dealer do it w/ the Hammer)
spark plug change
valve lash adjustment
distributor belt change
distributor cap and rotor change
spark plug wire change (is this needed if all seems OK?)
brake pad change if needed
replacement of the two small rubber oil lines in the right rear well to the tank
replacement of my intermittent squeaky alternator and fan belts
manual tranny fluid change
front differential fluid change
(already changed out power steering fluid recently)
2 new front tires (I am leaning towards Goodyear F1's - consumer reports liked these the most - and I just can't get myself to put on Yoko AVS ES1000 again - they're so loud!)
Did I forget anything?? Thank you all!! And as a reward for your recommendations, I promise to document well! Maybe Arjan and Randall can come see the process this summer?!

I do have one comment on your list - the 2 front tyres. If you are just replacing the fronts, you should make sure they match the back, especially on a C4. And if there isn't much tread left on the rears, then I'd replace all 4.
I had mismatched front / rear tyres on mine when I bought it and I wouldn't recommend it.

Hi Garrett,
My C4 has covered close to 120,000 miles and has a patchy service record for the past 3 years. I wanted to get back to a regular service schedule and avoid potential problems and came up with pretty much the same list as you. I had no idea how old the dist belt was so changed it, along with a 24k service, transmission/front diff service & oil change, and brake fluid change. Other Belts were inspected and didn't need changing.
There were a few extras to eliminate minor oil leaks, and I didn't bother changing the dist cap or plug leads - I figured as they look OK I should be able to tell after the service if they were worth changing. The engine feels really sweet now - but then it was running like a pig before. Might be worth holding out on changing these if your car is running well now.
The specialist used Magnatec - same as I had been using though I had no input into the choice.
Cheers,
David

Garrett,
Just follow the requirements established in the owners manual. The valve adjustment of course is very important, too tight is much worse than too loose. As far as the tires are concerned stay with the same tires front and rear. I was able to log 100,000 miles on my 964C4 with just routene maintenance except for the clutch (my fault). Good maintenance pays a dividend.

Thanks everyone for your input.
Arjan, I know of your 100K repair story - it was great! I just didn't know if 100 and 50 would be the same.
Shoot, I guess I am stuck having to get some of the same tires for the front. I was hoping to get front tires of the type I eventually wanted to end up with (Goodyear F-1's), and having a period of transition where they didn't match the rears until the rears wore out was the plan. I guess that is not a good idea as you have all pointed out.
Shoot! I might go deaf from the noise of those darn Yokohamas... or I just spring for two more rear tires? I would feel "wasteful" getting rid of a set of almost brand new rear tires!!! Too bad they don't fit my 65!

Garrett, how about selling the two Yokohamas with good tread here on the Rennlist classifieds? (What size are they? Which Yoko?) Then you can go to the four new ones.
If you replace the front two you'll be caught in a cycle: the rears will wear out before those, then you'll have to get new rears and still be with a tire you don't like.
Does that make sense to anyone else? Sorry, I'm permanently confused. J

THat's why I think I'll get some of the kind I WANT to put on the front, then figure something out regarding the rears. Good idea trying to sell them; didn't really think of that. Think that would happen?!
I guess it's worth a try. They are Yokohama AVS ES100's, size 255/40 17's, by the way.

Hey JT - good to see you on this board too!
Consumer reports said that Goodyear Eagle F1's are better with regards to noise; next were Toyo TS1 (something like that); Yoko ES100's were as good with dry traction as the others, but noisier, according to those guys.
My tires make a pretty hefty droning at low speeds. Now, I do have a cabrio, so that might increase noise over someone with a coupe. I find that it will make a droning noise when I come to a stop; from about 20mph to 5mph. At around 60-80mph the rear tires (my ES100's are on the rear; A-008P's on the front) make an "oscillating" noise that is not really loud, but definitely there.
Due to costs, I am planning on putting on the ES100's on the front. It seems matching tires is most important.
Now, I just need to decide if I keep the 205/50 size, or if I get 225/45's... what do ya'll think?

Garrett,
Youre point about changing over to Mobil 1 synthetic oil interests me as there has been much discussion in this area over oil leaks that appeared only after using Mobil 0w-40 for the first time.
I am no expert so I dont like to comment but it would be interesting to hear other more experienced owners opinions on the matter.

I like the increased oil change interval with synthetics, and it must be a better oil since it's recommended by Porsche (right?!); yet I am aware of the issue of new leaks popping up with the lighter oil. I have no leaks at this point - if some arise, I'll just have to go back to the old "dino" oil.
Hmmm... or maybe I stick to the dino oil... haven't bought the oil yet... so it's still up for debate.
