Tiptronic Lag
I've read a number of articles about the torque converter lag with the C-2 tiptronic. Is there a fix for this? Did these transmissions work like this when they were new? I bought my C-2 Triptronic used and there has always been a "tourque converter engagement lag" mainly after shifting into 2nd. The problem seems to be worse in tip mode. This is something I have became used to but would love to find a fix for it........

What I find more annoying than the lag is the fact that I can't hold 1st gear. Now that's what I would love to fix.

I agree that the automatric upshift from 1 to 2 when one lifts or blips (which I assume includes a brief lift) is irksome. I would certainly prefer the upshift delayed until I approach or hit the red line. However, Porsche engineers, who are also drivers like us, MUST have considered alternative shift programs before they decided on the one we have. My question is "Why?" And, are ther new tips the same?

I am with you guys on both of these issues. I thaught my car was messed up when hitting second and then the torque converter locks up making it feel like it shifted again. I tell my friends it has a 2 1/2 gear. I also dislike the fact that it wont stay in first when you lift off the throttle. Do all the Tips do this even the 993, 996 cars?

Not sure about 993, but the 996 will not shift up in 1st unless you hit red line. I forgot to mention that after I reset my DME (disconnect negative on battery for 15 minutes then reconnect and drive 15 minutes as if it was stolen) the 2nd gear lag seems to be less apparent and smoother. I believe the DME reset also resets the Tip's adaptation memory.

Thanks to all that have responded so far. This lag drove me crazy until I found others were experiencing the same thing.....misery loves company. It seems odd that an 80k car would have such a problem. I still like the car alot.....mine holds 1st better if I leave it to the auto shift....and I love the way it downshifts and hauls **s at 50mph+.

The '92 onwards tip cars had a revised Tip control unit which is better. Not interchangeable, according to Adrian's book. Shame!
I have the same issues with my '91 tip, and having driven Johnfm's '92 tip, the changes were significant.

such a shame the 92 programming can not be retrofitted to the earlier cars. I am going to try to unhook my battery and try the lead foot school of driving hopefully teaching my slushbox to stop slouching!

Rob, what were the changes for '92?
- holds first gear in tip mode
- locks the torque converter in 1st (mine doesn't - if you lift off in 1st it either drops the revs to tickover or changes up to 2nd)
- display shows which gear you're in, even in D (mine only shows individual gears in tip mode)
Overall, it feels more like a manual gearbox, especially in tip mode. Mine is better in D (or 3) unless being driven hard, when tip is better.
