Default Reconditioned Steering Racks

That leak I've had for a couple of years ain't going away and I guess it is time to deal with it. Anyone got any recommendations on good reconditioners/remanufacturers of racks? Should I look OEM, is Griffiths good? - all thoughts welcomed. TIA

P.S. Actually Phil, how is the one in your car? If you're going anyway.......

One option might be cheaper to install a new manual rack, ala RS America and Carrera RS. They run around $500, discounted, new from Porsche.

Question

On a C4 wouldn't the manual rack be quite a bit of work to turn? My powersteering stopped a while ago for about 1 minute, and it sure made me feel like a weakling when I was pulling out of the driveway!!!

I assume it's geared differently than the power unit...?

Are even the C2's hard to turn with manual steering; curious because my 65 911 is so light that it's easy to turn even when going around town; but with 1000+ extra pounds, I'd think it would be tough. I wouldn't know, but just curious since I am sure my power rack will die sometime!

My rack is in the same condition as Ruairidh's and was wonder if disabling the power steering is any more complex than removing the belt from the PS pump?

Also, I'm assuming with the pump disabled that would stop the vast majority of the leak up front, is this correct?

Regards,
Jeff

Yes he did. Not convinced about a manual rack on a C4......but I am following in your footsteps with a S4 brake conversion - more later on this but thanks for all your (and Bill Verburg and Adrian and others) tireless help with the tiresome questions.

If you have any questions, please let me know. It's a pretty straight forward upgrade.

Yes you do need to increase muscle bulk a bit but you can do it. I have driven a number of RUFs, all Turbos with and without AWD, without power steering and owned a 944 without power steering. You adjust to it. Remember as well that with manual steering you reduce the weight a little bit.
You will have sore shoulders for a while but you get over it. Being able to go much faster with the Turbo helps

PS: A certain celeb 964 Speedster owner had his power steering replaced with manual.

It's rather easy to remove the rack and re-install it. If you have a workshop or a mechanic you trust there is a cheap option. Buy a new kit of bushings from the ZF-agent in your country. Send a mail to zf.com, they will forward your mail if you don't know who the agent is. Within a week I had the kit in my mailbox and it only cost $60. My workshop changed the bushings for another $120. You won't get it any cheaper!

Remember to have the ZF partnumber ready when you call ZF. You find it
on the plate on the rack.

Good luck!

hallo
The manual Steering has different gearing and is by no means to compare
with a unhooked power steering . Even so i am not that certain celeb i have a manual Steering in my Speedster .
