Default Selling my 930 for a 964

Wondering if I could get some input on which year(s) are the best (most reliable) for the 964 series. I've got an '87 930 that I will be selling this spring to start a 964RS project. I also plan on supercharging it in the future. Any imput would be greatly appreciated, I've read most of the threads, just would like to hear from the drivers out there.

BTW, if you know someone looking for a 930 let me know
108K diamond blue metallic (rare) Dark Blue interior, stock

thanks in advance guys.

Congrats on your decision, Chris! I think we might be of greater assistance if you provide just a little more info:

- How much did you want to spend on the car plus RS and supercharger mods?
- How do you plan to use it? Track, autocross, weekend cruiser or daily driver?

I think once we know what sort of experience you're after, it will be easier to offer opinions, suggestions and insights based on our own experiences.

I dont get it. If your going to be doing a 'project car' why would you be worried about whats most reliable. If your going to do a supercharger as well, then you will have an aewsome project car when your done.

Like Joey says, more information required. Will you drive the 964 for a year before your begin the 'project'. This may have an impact on the 'reliability' issue. How much of a 'project' do you anticipate? Do you intend to strip the car and rebuild to RS specs buy buying a roller, or are you intending to buy a clean street daily driver and modify it to RS specs? Whats you budget?

Thanks for chiming in guys w/ the questions. Here goes in answer;

Joey:
- How much did you want to spend on the car plus RS and supercharger mods?

I'd like to p/u the car for $22-24K or less. Strong running engine w/history is more important than cosmetics to me. I plan on stripping down the interior to RS specs, adding the TPC supercharger kit in another year or so after purchase.

- How do you plan to use it? Track, autocross, weekend cruiser or daily driver?
I plan on using it mostly for weekend DE, Track, and want the wife to be able to drive it! ;-)

3.8 964:
I guess I'd still like to be able to drive my "project" while doing the project. It basically comes down to me wanting to still be able to drive with my friends while I do the conversion.

To both: I figure I can get probably about $28-30K for my 930 and that will be my entire budget over the next year or so for mods.

Cool project.

Im coming to LA to live in July. Would love to catch up and see how you project is going. The Supercharger would be awesome me thinks.

To your original question, the later model 964's were the best, I have read.

You know they were only built between '89 and '94.

Good luck

I'm not sure the supercharger will fit in the budget but let's see what the numbers say.

To get to "RS" specs, here's a rough estimate on some of the parts involved:

- Brakes: $3,000
- Coilovers: $2,500
- Sway Bars: $750
- Strut Brace: $250
- Recaro Buckets: $2,000
- RS Steering Wheel: $300
- RS Carpets: $300
- RS Door Panels: $200
- RS Chip: $300
- LW Flywheel: $650

- Parts Subtotal: $10,250 without labor.

- Supercharger: $7,500 installed

- New Parts Subtotal: $17,750

- Balance remaining for car purchase: $12,250

Of course, not all of the options above are necessary. The seats are pricey but very helpful if you want to get the car down to RS weight. And the stock 964 brakes are plenty capable but lack the heat dissipating ability of RS binders. LWF, chip and interior trim are also optional, but if you cut those items too then what you'd have would be a fairly stock C2!

My recommendation would be to look hard for a track prepped 964. I'm not referring to a race car but one which already has many of the "RS" modifications listed above. These seem to be slow movers since they appeal to a smaller group of Porsche enthusiasts and people rarely recoup the dollars invested in these mods.

IMHO, I think that's the only you'll be able to realize your supercharged RS dream.

Chris,

Send me an email. I've been looking for a 930. I have an 89 C4 which is probably not what you are looking for but you can take it for a spin.
