Default RS carpet install: removing the center hinge point for rear seats?

I've honestly tried to do modifications to this car that weren't reversible. I'm changing the carpet to something like the RS carpets, but I want the ability to put the back seats back in the future. I've searched people's how to threads for carpet install, but no one addresses this. I haven't removed all the carpet around this area yet. Does this part bolt out? Or do I need an angle grinder? Which kind of stinks.

I was actually considering having a seat back custom made to be attached to the rear wall that was stitched in the same manner my front seats are. So having a place for the kids could be permanent but not look like the tacky seats from the 90's.

Another random question- I actually like the rear parcel shelf in black vinyl or leather. Am I crazy for wanting to use that and the rear quarters in "standard" finish instead of carpet? Its not a matter of cost as I have a full RS carpet set now. Just wondering about if I want to use all of it...

Hey Matt, that part needs to be cut out, I'm sure it would be easy to weld back in later anyway.
I also thought about leaving the rear parcel shelf in, it's all easy to change later, and easily reversible I think.

I noticed foxmans carpet goes around it and looks quite neat.

This is how mine looks, ill probably cut it off when i get time.

I haven't started my recarpet job yet, but Bob at appbiz gave a great idea where some of his customers create a custom fire extinguisher bracket for the rear seat bracket would be so you don't modify the car...

Considering grinding out the hinge but still keeping the belts for the kids. But I'm looking for feedback. The stock back seats look dated to me. The car will have leather recaro pole positions, so I don't think the backs "fit" anymore. I'm considering building a back support pad to permanently mount to the vertical back wall. I drew it out below. Any thoughts? Does this look cheesy?

i put a layer of closed cell foam on rear parcel shelf and back of the bottom of rear seat .. weight nothing and the foam around the humps and dips (rear speaker etc.. made it easy to get the carpet smooth but agree cutting it out would be best when the interior is fully stripped - just make sure to cover the rear screen inside to prevent any sparks marking the glass or headliner ... its very securely fixed in but an easy grind out and weld up for a proficient (not me) welder.

hard to see well with the APPBIZ RS carpet kit in but it's all nice and smooth now ... need to upload my progress 'pulled the trigger' thread.

Matt,

The seat hinge is securely welded as Dingo notes, so if you want the ability to put the back seats back in again removing the hinge is not really an option.

I also tried to stay with irreversible mods, but I’m not going to miss back seats and the RS carpet looks much better without the hump.

Matt, execution is really going to define the finished product, IMO. I like your idea and I think it COULD come out really nice. Whether or not it will look out of place is up to the upholsterer/designer that is going to build it.

yeah. execution is key here. So I'm actually starting to gravitate toward buying black back seat uprights and just using those.

I like the idea but I think I'd do separate minimal cushions per side. In fact I've been considering something like that myself. Singer has done some minimal cushions that look decent.

When I did it on my black 964, I used some carpet underlayment to pad each side of the bracket to level out the area. Creates a better carpet line and doesn’t hack up the car.

That looks really good Jordan. I might take that approach myself. Hope you've been enjoying this killer run of swell.
