Default Ruf short shift for C4 89 info

For those of you interested

I have just installed Ruf`s short shift for 89 C4 part number R64 400 000 00. My first impression is that it is worth the 210 € + shipping and taxes. The shifter **** (original) is higher than the original position and closer to the driver`s leg. It shortens the shifts a lot but I must say I expected more. Maybe because the day before the installation I tested an original Porsche short shift on a 996 and that one was SHORT!!! Amazingly short!
Nevertheless I would rerecomend this for those who are interested.
The picture shows the complete kit received from Ruf Parts and construction are very different from the original parts.

Burgass,

Thanks for posting the picture and letting us know your thoughts on the RUF kit. For comparison, I've previously posted pics and procedure on installing the Carrera RS short shifter, which sounds like it has similar benefits in positioning the shift **** closer to the steering wheel.

Hello Bill

Before buying the Ruf kit we tried (me and my mechanic) the RS parts. It did not work on the C4 because it was longer on the bottom and we had to modify the protective plate. Furthermore the height in the cabin seemed the same. So I abandoned this variant and started looking for an after market kit. The only such kit I found is Ruf. Amazingly nobody else in europe has made the effort to construct such a kit for the C4 89
Cheers

How much shorter it the throw? What do you feel is the benefit? Do you like the **** standing higher? How much higher is it?

Thanks
Mark

Mark

I can not say exactly but I think it is something around 20%. Best way to know the exact number is to post a mail to Ruf on the following adress:

att Claudia Ellenrieder
info@ruf-automobile.de
or give her a call at +49 (0) 8265 911 911

The benefit is IMO big. Considering that I am a tall person and after adjusting my seat backwards I had to stretch myself in order to reach the gear ****. I have also extended the steering wheel towards me with 11cm. 1st and 5th gears were worse. The gear **** is around 2-3 cm higher now and the whole gear lever is tilted little more towards the drivers leg. I other words closer to the steering wheel. In my case I adjusted the gear lever also backwards - towards the back of the car. That adjustment is done on the underside of the car and you have to take away the protective plate in order to reach the gear change rods.

I wonder if any similar OEM parts are available, perhaps from the (rare) C4 RS lightweight.

As Bill mentioned, the positioning of this Ruf shift kit sounds very similar to the C2 RS/Cup shifter, which I happen to like a lot.

Talking about shifters, is there a shifter **** that replaces the factory one w/o welding?
I am looking for the **** only, without leather boot.

I ordered RUF Artnr.: R64 424 075 01, but one has to cut the org. shifter and than weld in order to get it work.

Thanks...Hans

Default ...

would you be compromising reliability or "feel" by installing this unit costing hundreds less? it doesn't appear to have the additional "pivot" piece as the ruff unit.

[/QUOTE]

any thoughts or experience?

What if any mods to the tunnel were necessary to install the RUF SS into your C4? Was this a straight bolt-in? Exactly what was involved in "adjusting the gear lever backwards?" Thanks

I installed a Momo Air Aluminum **** w/o a boot. It is designed for a round shifter, but a simple shim made installation a five minute job. The rigid mounting gives a much more positive shifting feel over the rubber mounted OEM ****, IMO.

You can see my install in this photo:

I'll order the RUF SS now. Also thanks for the tip on adjustment and the pic.
