If you want to talk about nervous. Look how little holds a 280 kg engine in the yoke and imagine the leverage on that case.

As I wrote before, I don't pretend to understand the engineering forces. I'm only using what I'm told works and I had no case damage or leaks from using it and I have had my engine case apart since.

I did used the engine for a few lifts and hated every one. The mechanics just dont look right to me.

Let me ask you this, would you start the engine while car is lifted by case? Not me.

+1....after all, wouidn't you be suspending the rear of the car by using only the four 8mm engine mounts bolts?

How many bolts suspend the engine in normal use? I count two.

We all put on our big boy pants when doing DIY on our cars, but there is no obligation to follow advice. If you want to try other methods then so be it. Based on my actual experience I’m fine with the engine case lift. Until I hear of 964 owners relating damage caused by this method I’ll continue using it.

I took a 2 inch long piece of pipe about 1.25 in diameter spilt it and attached each half to a piece of wood so that the pipe halves would fit over the round pieces of the engine case either side the case seam. I figured that it would help spread the load and keep the engine from sliding around.

That's a good point, but, I think the car would be suspended from the mounts, engine and tranny. The effect on the fluidic engine mounts might be adverse. May not have been designed for engine lifts. Those with solid mounts wouldn't have an issue.

Great shot of inside of case. Wish I had had the skills to rebuild mine.

Hey Streetdaddy. Bet you didn't expect all this. Cheers.

So, after 28 years, has anyone who has lifted the rear of their 964 using the engine as a jack point had a problem? If so, what was the problem?

Thanks

I've never heard anyone reporting an immediate failure after an engine lift.

If anyone had a more long term problem, how would they trace it engine lifts? Oil leaks happen. Front/rear seal leaks happen. Bearing wear happens. Can anyone call any of these wear issues premature because of engine lifts? Hard to do I'd guess.
