Default Timing Belt Help Please...

Please don't make fun of me and how long this simple belt change is taking me... lol

Time aways the problem.

So... I'm ready to lock the flywheel in place and noticed that although the flywheel indicator is lined up with the bell housing "window", the distributor cam pulley indent is lined up with the aluminum housing mark and the lower balance pulley seems lined up with the plastic tab; the upper balance pulley seems off by a considerable amount (pictures attached). Note: Car ran perfect

Question is: Should I just mark the upper balance pulley as it sits, continue and reinstall to as it was or move it to where it should be when re-assembled?

As always, Thank you for the help.

Its off one tooth. Probably not much of an issue, but may cause some extra vibration. I would definitely line it up when you reinstall it. I wouldn't leave it like that. It's a simple fix.

As I said though, it ran perfectly before so I'm a little concerned to change anything. If it wasn't vibrating and I move it to the "correct position", will it now vibrate?

Also having a problem breaking the main pulley bolt free...now going to Home Depot for a length of pipe to get some more leverage... ugh!

Lining up the balance shafts and belt has always been real difficult for me... not sure why but always struggle with it. Always a tooth or two off... You do not want to drive with balance shafts being off... any additional vibration can cause bad things to happen... broken headers, etc...

This technique saved me... Maybe it'll help you too.

Set it right, how it's been running fine is still wrong.
It's easy to knock it off a tooth while trying to line up both shafts while tightening the belt...

Main pulley bolt giving me a real hard time even with a persuader.

Do I have to remove this to do the belts?

If by "main pulley bolt" you mean the crank pulley bolt, no you do not need to remove it. Iirc, this is a 1 time use item, so if you've already taken it off, its time for a new bolt.

All you need to do to line up the lower balance shaft pulley is loosen the nut using the special tool and a wrench, yank the belt out of the way and rotate the pulley into position. No special procedures like rubbing your belly while hopping on one foot and signing the alphabet backwards or anything. It's very simple.

you can just squeeze the belts between the rear belt cover and the accessory drive pulley, no need to remove the crank bolt.
i've never bothered replacing with new though - always just reused.

the belly-rubbing and one-foot-hopping is only for setting 968 cam timing.

LOL

Good because I definitely shouldn't multi-task.

....
Aligning the balance shaft to spec will make the engine run slightly more perfectly.

Finally finished!

Would have taken a lot less time if I didn't clean every nut and bolt before assembling them. Thank goodness for a lot of help from my 21 year old daughter (my son has no interest, but she was home from college and does).

Some pictures and yes...
