Default 86 944 TURBO STEERING SHAFT REPLACEMENT?

I've pulled my rack for a rebuild and am trying to do the steering shaft as well. I'm no expert and I usually somewhat follow some sort of guide on jobs i'm doing for the first time, but I can't find any write ups on this anywhere! Can anyone either direct me to a good article or at least tell me what needs to be done? Everything I've found so far is very vague, do I need to pull my intake manifold and brake booster heat shield? Can I do this without having to re clock the steering wheel? I have no clue how to do that. Any details, instructions or articles would be much appreciated!

it'd be much easier if you did pull the booster out of the way.
clocking the steering wheel is super easy since your car being an 86 shouldnt have airbags to worry about. just spin the shaft around until it is *right*..

you can get a new one here:

Hey thanks for the reply. So I'm looking at pulling the intake manifold and all that jazz to get to the booster?

Indeed it is, but it offers nothing in terms of changing the shaft. At least I haven't found anything

I had the turbo out when I did mine so that wont help much. Just don't spin the steering wheel around in circles like a 4 year old playing with a new toy with the shaft disconnected otherwise you will be installing a new clockspring.

Digging up a somewhat old thread here but Maxbr7t, did you end up replacing the steering drive shaft and if so, how did it go? One of my universal joints on my shaft is bad which is causing the steering to bind up and I need to now replace mine but as you found, I'm finding little-to-no guidance on how to perform such a job.
