Default Wastegate shims

Whats the general concensus on wastegate shims? What is the general thickness of the shims added for decent upper in boost (or what does the general kits specify).

No one would happen to have a layout of the shim would they? I work at a machine shop down here at school and a raceshop back home, so i'm hoping to just make my own (varies thicknesses for when i go to the track maybe?)

Thanks a bunch,
Kevin

What would shimming the WG do, stop a leaky WG? If you shim too much what will it result in? Damage?
What are the usual symptoms of a bad/leaky WG?

Thanks
Mike

Aparently Porsche designed the wastegate system on the 951 such that it is perpetually at a slight leak. Shimming allows it to fully close giving you more and more linear boost.

I have been having boost problems. No boost in first, minimal in 2nd, a little more in 3rd, then 11 psi in 4th and 5th. I am thinking my WG is F'ed up. I have been told to crimp the line to the WG to test it. If it turns out that the WG is bad, would these shims be a way to fix it, or does it need to be replaced? What would shimming a stock WG in working order do? Beneficial?

Thanks
Mike

Sounds like yours would need to be rebuilt (aparently not recommended by many) or replaced with a better unit. WG shimms also compensate for a weak spring (over time they wear out) - they may help but IMO don't solve the problem. I have some - may put them in until I have enougn money to upgrade my WG.

OK, thanks for the info, I gotta crimp my WG line and determine if the WG is bad or not. How would I go about doing this? WHere do you crimp it at?

Thanks
Mike

6.5mm ive taken many wastegates apart and measured for spring bindage and travel 6.5mm is in the safe limmits and yields the best results.

To really test it, just unplug the line at the banjo bolt and cap the banjo so no air leaks in the intake. Don't get on boost untill in 2-3 gear and let it roll on very slowly. Watch the gauge - you don't want spikes. The car will shut down or stumble to protect itself if you overboost (except not sure about a spike). That should tell you something - but not much. It won't rule out your WG if you still don't have boost - but it is a good candidate. If you have boost, then there is a leak in the line going to the WG. If still no boost, like I said, it could be your WG but also could be turbo or leaky (big leak!).

If you get no boost with the WG disconnected, then wouldn't mean that the WG is bad would it, because with the WG disconnected you should see boost(unless you have a problem elsewhere)?

Also, why can't you test it out in 1st? That is the gear I'm getting the least boost in. Will it damage something?

Thanks
Mike

The small versions of Tial and Deltagate WG's are good if your not looking to spend that much money. I'm planning on going big, and getting a 46mm Tial and bolting that sucker on with adapter plates.
