I posted few photos of my friends Audi V8+01E equipped Beetle with paddle shift, here's a video of it too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSaD...ature=youtu.be

Investigations into this project show that it's not an easy or cheap concept. At this stage I don't have the type of dollars required and need to pay bills before this starts. However if we were to go ahead, this is what I have roughly figured out.

Option 1.)

-Purchase Audi 01E box that already has Dog gears available. Pricing seems to be anywhere from $500 - $3500 depending on vendor and condition.
-Buy Dog Gears ($6500 - $10,000) depending on maker / locations.
-Buy sq shift converter $3,500 - $5000au depending on location.
-Buy new axles/CVs $2000
-Fabricate an input shaft coupler $? but guessing at least $2000.
-Other bits and pieces plus installation and shipping costs. ~$15,000

So lets say at least $30,000

Option 2.)

- Find someone who will make a Dog Set for our current 968 box. Possible one off cost inc installation $15,000
- Buy Sq shifter $3500 - $5000
- Adapt it to fit our gearbox. Hopefully not too difficult?
- Other bits and pieces (make shifter?) plus installation and shipping costs. $7000 - $10,000

So lets say approx $30,000

Option 3.)

- Leave gearbox as is. Hope it handles the extra power of new motor.
- Spend $15-$20k on new Aero package that might net similar improvements in lap times as sq shifter.

Patrick, how fast can you hit the clutch pedal?

http://www.supercarsllc.com/newmaste...addle-shifters

Alternatively...maybe you could rig up a system, with a fast-acting electric solenoid/linear actuator on the clutch fork, so that when you pull the paddle it hits the clutch (only has to move a few mm), then swaps the gears and then hits the clutch back in place (reverse the solenoid).

Patrick, if you elect not to pursue the sequential transmission, can you make up for some of the short comings of the manual box with a form of anti lag? Or perhaps an ignition cut during shifting so that you can shift without lifting the throttle? Not sure if it would be too harsh on the engine and gearbox though.

For what it's worth.
Maybe just get the dog gears in the 968 box.
You'll still be able to change gears instantly, but still required to move the H pattern (but that doesn't take time as it's still immediate shift)
That way, your box is now stronger and it'll handle your motors output. (2 birds 1 stone?)

Take it to a track day and see how it goes. Then you can further investigate if you really need a SQ shifter. If it's not needed (would be nice to have though)
You'll have extra coin to dump into aero.

To me, that sounds more of a realistic approach.

The paddle shift system that my friend made allows to shift very quickly combined with ignition cut. And its cost is more like 1000 maximum not 10 000.

We're not allowed Paddle shift in our class Peep.

Pauly, not a bad idea.

Timm, yes we can run all the bells and whistles available via the Motec system. Perhaps we can nip away at the time loss comparison vs our competitors.

Another budgeting factor to think about would be your diff I think?

If you got an audi box, I'm guessing you won't be able to swap in your current diff as the 968 r&p and differential is G50 based?

Yes, good point. Perhaps as Pauly says, we first find someone who will make a Dog set and use the box like that and see what gains it gives us.

Still chipping away at this idea. I think getting a set of Dog gears for the 968 box is the only option. At this stage my search for these has come up empty. There's plenty of options for the Audi 2 and 4wd version of the O1E boxes but not ours. I did get put onto this crowd in Germany. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Leist...PAGES_TIMELINE

I contacted them and asked if they had anything for a 968 trans. He said no but could probably make something specific. I think he assumes there will be little difference between the internals of the various O1E boxes. I'm trying to find diagrams with specs of the internals of the 968 box. Any ideas? Maybe the PET...I'll check.

I started building a SolidWorks file for the coupler actually, just to get an idea of what it would have to look like. I need to finish the splining but I'll share it when I'm done.

Thanks Michael. Just not sure if the conversion is worth it after all the ancillaries that need to be built/bought to fit one? Getting a 1 off gearset made up isn't cheap at all but it still may be worth it by comparison. However not sure what can be still retained from the stock internals so need to get a box to a manufacturer to take a look inside before quoting.
