Default How realistic to change to Audi 01E gearbox?

Was discussing ideas with our Engineer and he remarked that we lose about .4 of a second each time we shift gears compared to our competition with Sequential Gearboxes. That's a TON of time we lose out on not to mention boost that drops significantly by comparison also. To convert to the local Albins SQ gearbox is at least a $50k exercise which is out of my budget at the moment. So we're looking at options.

To my knowledge, there's no straight cut gears for the Porsche (Audi) 968 6 speed box however these are available for the Audi 01E box not to mention the SQS semi sequential shifter kit.

From what I understand the 01E can be run in 2wd config but I'm just not sure on how realistic it would be to begin a project like this. I'm not quite sure on the size differences between the two 'boxes nor how easily it would be to line up the driveshafts to the wheels. Doing a bit of internet search it would appears that a few people have investigated some of this in the past. Just wondering if anyone has got definitive answers yet?

I looked into this, and if memory serves, the main issue is adapting the splined coupler. I believe the spline count is the same, but the diameter is a hair smaller on the trans input shaft. 968 axles look like they'd work, depending on if the axle stub shafts are compatible. My budget has always been basically zero for stuff like this until I clear out all my other little projects (never).

Call Porsche and ask them to offer a "crate" PDK...

Patrick, Try find someone local who makes gears for a living. If you can provide the sizes, number of teeth ect for every gear. I'm sure they can make them for you at what ever strength you require. I believe this will cost less than an albans and trying to make the audi 01e box fit

We've gotten large straight cut gears made a fair amount of times. i dont know on the prices, but it may be worth looking into.

I'd be looking at the older guys who dont use CNC machines. it's cheaper for them to make 1 off gears rather than draw them up ect and program.

What's the actual gearbox part number for the 968 6 speed?

My copy of the PET shows:

01E 300 042 J - standard 6-speed

01E 300 042 K - w/40% LSD

01E 300 042 S - Torsion Unit

Note that these don't show up in my normal parts source as viable part numbers for a complete transmission.

Thanks Jay.

Looks like this local company does a Dog set and they stipulate that it's for a 2wd transaxle, but I'm not sure if it's the same box. Seems like there are a few versions of the 01E out there.

Patrick... not sure I understand if you want taller or shorter ratios?

Sorry Thom, I wasn't particularly clear. A hurried thread while at work. However, it's not the ratios that I'm talking about. Although having a choice wouldn't hurt. It's being able to utilise the SQS shifter and a straight cut setup so as to minimise shift time and boost loss. SQS have a Dog set but for a different version of the Audi 01E gearbox which they also have their 'poor man's sequential' setup available for. So I was asking about the possibility of fitting that gearbox and using it in a RWD config. But apparently "The problem with the 968 trans is the input shaft. No one makes one that mounts to the Porsche splines coupler." as quoted possibly by Scott Dewitt or someone from his company Advanced Automotion.

I've sent an email to PPG who say they have a set for a 2WD box used in a Transaxle config on their site. Which could mean that instead of swapping gearboxes, we could convert the SQS shifter to our 968 box. In the end the whole process would cost $15-$20k but it's substantially cheaper than a full Sequential conversion. Even if we only save .2 of a sec per change, that would represent a reasonable ROI as silly as this all sounds.

Would it be very expensive to get a coupler machined to suit the audi box?

Or, what if you put in an audi box, and when you get the new gearset, have the input shaft custom made to suit the Porsche coupler?

Just a couple thoughts...I'm sure you've been all over this anyway. Hopefully the PPG dog set can work in your 968 box.

It has been done already and I contemplated the idea of this few nyears ago. Audi FWD 01E gearboxes are dirt cheap here, you can get one for 150-250 euros. My friend has old Beetle with Audi 4.2 V8 and o1E gearbox (mid-engine), he developed a paddle shift system based on arduino for that too.
