Question Racer's X octane

I was looking over the octane boosters list again and was curious to know if anyone had tried using anything other than race gas and/or Xylene (Toulene) ???

It is getting pretty expensive and I would lie to try alchahol (site says rubbing alchahol is ok?? ) and/or methalyne. I noticed you just can't use as much of a mixture if you use these.

Also, can you use the washer fluid that is mostly methalyne??? I know guys use it in water injection, but not sure if you can use it in the washer fluid form directly in your gas.

I think they are both about 100-101 octane.

I have and do use both.

When I want to drive hard I will fill up with Union 76 100 octane. It is $4 + here in Nothern California.

All other times I will mix 3 gallons of Toulene in with a tank of 92 octane.

After 20 some tanks of each, my butt dyno says the car likes the Toulene mix better than the 100 octane. I run 18psi of boost.

I use 100 octane from Union 76 from time to time, but usually just mix 91 octane with Toulene.

Bill,
Have you found a good source for Toulene? If so, where?

toddk911; Alcohol is a family of fuels. Methanol is a one of those alcohols and has a very high octane rating like toluene. It is one of the main ingedients of washer fluid but so is water. Therefore you cannot mix washer fluid with gasoline because it will separate from the gasoline. You can mix straight methanol with gas. However, stoichiometric mixture for methanol is 6.45 to 1 and any significant amount of it would cause your engine to run lean.
If you inject methanol and/or water separately in the inlet tract you get the best of all worlds, but that's a whole different ballgame.

Yes, I still need to get back on my water/methanal injection system.

Quite a few drag racers I know mix toluene and/or xylene all the time, it works great for low cost.

I buy Toluene at my local Sherwin Williams paint store. They have 1, 5, and 55 gallons available for purchase.

Not all Sherwin Williams stores carry the Toluene though. It seems that Toluene is used by Meth labs to manufacture their porduct. One Sherwin Williams store made the font page "Drug ring busted - supplies purchased at Sherwin Williams". So they no longer carry it.

I buy the 5 gallon cans. I have contemplated getting a 55 gal drum, but that is a big risk/hazard to store at home. Also I figure that purchasing 55 gallons, I may get a visit from the local DEA. Nothing to hide from them, but they probably could hassle me for improper hazmat storage.

Yes, very familiar with Toulene/Xylene but was wondering about any other octane boosters that were listed on Racer's X and see if anyone used them.

The methanal and alchahol are very cheap and still have a 100-101 octane rating.
