Default Balance shaft covers?

Is anyone aware just how compatible the b/shaft covers are between models? Are the all the same or are did the factory make changes "because we can" through the different models? I will need some for our 968 motor but not sure if we can use from any model. We don't have b/shafts in this motor.

edit: I just went to garage and checked. My covers are stamped 92 so they are 968 ones which means my 2.5L covers are still at LR. Thanks for posting the question I will have to call Mike/Dave. Sorry I guess my answer didn't help.

I believe the balance shaft covers from my 2.5L are on my 968 block. And of course I am running balance shafts.

If you aren't running B-shafts then the problem of "mixing and matching" blocks and covers is done away with.

In that case, why not just plug the oil holes (except the turbo feed) and ditch the covers altogether?

The covers contribute structurally to the block apparently.

Seeing as you aren't running balance shafts, could you get some flat plate laser cut to bolt on as covers? Then just use shorter bolts to bolt it on?

Yes, there are a few options. We already have some plugs made up although not 100% sure if they're going to fit depending on which covers we wind up using. May still go with a flat cover too.

Not convinced how much a structural role they play. Brings up a thought of making place holders that are stiffer however.

I would be inclined to use the later ones. i know there are differences how the balance shaft and bearings are held in place, not sure if that will make a difference overall.

Yeah I can't see it being a huge deal either, just what I read somewhere.

We just used the covers after sealing the oil passages. . Making a flat piece is not worth the trouble, it doesn't end up being flat.

To those that run without covers, what did you use to seal up the passages?

Might find something useful here for an idea. I typed in "plug" on their search engine.

M14 x 1.5 is the size of the tread for anyone wondering.

I know that you would not use this fitting to plug the hole...obviously but figured I could take a pic to show an M14 x 1.5 threaded into the cover confirming the size.

The depth on the hole when I just measured it is 10mm

This link might be a better source.
