Default 968 rod quality

They say that the majority of 968 rods are good. Here is proof. 3 out of 4 was good on this one!
Tomorrow I will try to find out if the crank is still usable.

I found it "for sale" and I bought it today.
The owner had found another engine to put in in stead. He had now sold the car and wanted to clean out the garage. I offered to help.

I need the crank for my 3 liter project. I am told that I will need the oil pump as well. I will resell the head and some other stuff like clutch manifolds etc. I am not sure wether I can sell the three good rods.

I have now:
1 complete 2.5 l turbo
1 new 3.0 l 968 block with pistons
1 968 lacking block and one rod.

It seems like not that much is missing.

I intend to take my time when building and take some photos of the different steps to show if you like.

Good price? I used to get some real deals on motorcycle parts from guys who were sick of stuff sitting in their garage. If you play your cards right, sometimes you can get it for free!

Yep, good price. I have found that if you want to buy a single part the prices are often ridiculously high, but if you buy a complete engine (or a complete car) for some more money it is most of the time a better deal.
This insight has led to that I now have a garage full of parts that I am sure that I will have use for some time in the future! If not, it is a comfort just to have them.

And how does your wife feel about all this? If you're as lucky as I am, she laughs about it.

Nice score!

What caused the rod to leave home? Where did it break? Are you sure 3 outa 4 are good? Or, was it the old weakest link? How's the crank? What rods you gonna use? I'm sure you know that metal is probably everywhere that oil travels and more. Cleaning the passages, cooler, pump, etc. On your new motor, if it's in doubt, replace it. Not necessarily w/new one, just parts that came off of a motor that didn't blow.

Bengt>> I also considered buying that engine, but I wasn't sure the crank was alright.
Have you checked the crank?
Please tell me its not alright so I don't regret I didn't made him an offer
No seriously, good luck with building the new engine!

Hello

The 968 rods are prone to failure, even forged, the technical manual says that it is mandatory to change all the rods whenever one rod bolt is untighten , there is from 93 a new rod model superseeding the old design with a reinfurcement at the bolt head seat.

Thanks for the advices.

The three remaining rods will end up as decoration and if I had an old 968, I would immediately tear it apart and swap the rods.
I will use the beefy 951 rods in stead.
I got the old oil cooler included so I guess they realised the value of not having metal particles in the engine and swapped. Is it at all possible to reliably clean an oil cooler?
I intend to use the oil pump if it is ok. It should at least be easy to clean.

The crank will need a regrind but I can't imagine that it is bent in any way.

Cheers

I would not use the oil cooler. I'm told, very difficult to remove all metal. With your 3L motor, have you considered Carillo rods?

I can vouch for throwing away that cooler also. I have a spare 951 engine with a spun #2 right now and there are copper pieces inside the return tube. The larger stuff stays in the screen - you would need cutting torches to properly clean your oil cooler.

i've got a stock 951 oil cooler, came off an engine with >500 miles, i'm just cleaning house so if you want it dirt cheap (including both brand-new stock lines) PM or email me.

btw i'd still be a bit worried about that crank, any time there's a hole in the side of the block and something THAT traumatic happened, i'd get it thoroughly checked, and possibly consider cryo-treating it if it is salvagable.

I haven't heard of anyone breaking 951 rods if there isn't any other problem.
Carillo rods would make it possible to have different length but I have heard that if you just finalise the top inside radius on the pistons and smooth out the combustion chambers, you will get a valid CR.

I have a tight budget and if it works I won't fix it.

Cheers

Default 968 vs 951 rod

Very different in size and shape.
