Default T04B options?

Hi, I have been reading about the various turbo options, and I could use some more detail about the T04B. Whatever compressor I use, I would be running on a 2.8l motor and a K26 center section with a #8 exhaust housing (which is what I believe I have now.) I'm at altitude (5200' or so) and want to achieve 280-300 RWHP.

I understand the T04B is easier to fit than the T04E, but some have said the T04E is no less laggy and has more top end, is there a good reason to run a T04B besides easier fitment? Seems like the extra potential of the T04E would be wasted on my motor.

What sort of specs would be ideal for this turbo?

I have also considered a K27 but they seem to cost more an have fewer options. Some say the newer Garret hybrids are better and cheaper.

Would it be worth using TEC's exhaust housing (similar to a #8?)

My instinct is to not spend a great deal on this first turbo but to run something in the $600-700 dollar range for a while and then look into a BB turbo upgrade in a year or two. Yet I think a K26/8 would be undersized for my application.

Thanks,
-Joel.

If you have a k26, you can always send it off to have it converted - it's not that much money. Even a k27 sounds small for your application though.

Joel I think if you run a T04 you will easily hit 300rwhp on a 2.8l motor. But for your application I would run a T04E to get the most out of your motor.

The #8 is way too restrictive for a 2.8L... Get a nice turbo to start with, don't save now to spend more later...

Thanks. The 2.8L (stroker) I'm planning to do mostly for low end torque, plus I have the S2 motor so why not? I don't mind giving up some of the top end for faster spooling, and if the T04E can push over 350HP it must have more CFM capacity than I need, and thus would spool more slowly?

My hotside options, I suppose, are the stock#8 or the TEC #8 compatible housing, or a custom downpipe and a Garrett hotside?

As for later, I might do a 3.0l motor or god-knows-what so I'd prefer not to go overboard on the turbo just yet.

If you want to go with the garrett hot side Speedforce sells a downpipe and headder combo that will work.

Don't forget about the mount. It will have to be modified to fit a Garrett center/hot section. BTW, guess what I picked up at Technodyne's garage sale... lets just say I'm 1/4 of the way to having a Garrett GT setup.

Joel,
listen to fast951. IMO a TEC T04E might even be undersized for your application, even given your quicker spooling preference. Part of more-boost-sooner is overcoming compressor wheel inertia, part is supplying the volume you need (over 10% more for you vs. a 2.5 liter) quickly. I have 12 psi by 3200rpm on my TEC T04E/46 on my 2.5 liter for a benchmark. Talk to him about your turbo needs. You need somebody with "been there-done that" experience.

OK maybe I will revise my HP goal down a bit. I thought the 360-400 HP kits out there used a T04E and thus it was oversized for my needs. If it is well suited to 300HP it might be perfect.

What is the HP range for the T04B?

Thanks,
Joel
