The guides will of course be reamed during the head rebuild.

Actually i haven't spent too much yet, basically only stuff i would have needed anyway, such as bearings and gaskets around 500 euros and 100 euros on glass bead blasting and electroplating parts to make them pretty. What I have spent so far on the actual build is:
50€ on resurfacing the block
The head will probably be around 250€ for resurfacing, new guides on the exhaust side and the bracket for the tensioner which broke during the chain failure
Cometic head gasket 120€

I have yet to buy the expensive parts. The turbo will be the biggest blow, as i won't be able to use the one i had on my shelf, and also the clutch when i'm a bit worried with using the stock PP even with a better disk. As these two parts together with the VEMS are the expensive parts, the final price greatly depends on what solutions i will come up with here. Hopefully i can find some slightly used parts.

This is progressing slowly, but getting there. Still got to make my exhaust and the long fifth gear and some other small miscellaneous stuff. Waiting for the VEMS which will be ready shortly. Having my garage on the other side of the continent from where i live is slowing me down quite a lot.

Went over the budget a little bit, with about 300... percent.

Philip came to visit me on his way from Finland to Germany, hope he doesn't mind posting a photo of his car here
Tuned his 2.5 16v turbo to 1 bar with VEMS controlling the boost, felt like it should (~400 hp). Engine bay is a bit different now, having VAG COP ignition system installed

Still got plenty of things to do to make the car nice, but my main goal has been to get it so I can drive it, since i've had the garage in Finland and I live myself in Germany; therefore building it has been a bit difficult. Now i've finally been able to finish it far enough to drive it, i fact I only drove it about 200km to see if everything works before i took in on the 2300km drive down to Berlin.

Earlier this summer I got the VEMS as mentioned from Peep, together with matching injectors and the COP harness and the coils. Installing was a piece of cake even for me with no previous experience of standalones, and had it running in no time. Straight out of the box it would work beautifully, smooth idle and a good tune right away. 10+ product and support!

I figured since I need to drive the car down here anyway through Estonia, i'll go to see Peep on the same time, and he tuned the electric boost control solenoid to be controlled by the VEMS. Then i controlled my journey, and did 1700km non-stop in 18 hours through Latvia, Lithuania and Poland to Berlin. My crossover pipe was leaking a bit already from the start, and became gradually worse by the time i arrived in Berlin. I was able to get the car to 280km/h on the autobahn, but it has still plenty of steam left to get it past 300 when i get the leak sorted. Bought the .73 fifth gear from Dimi earlier this year, and I love it, does exactly 150km/h at 3000rpm, so theoretically it would do 350 before hitting the limiter at 7000rpm, but of course i don't have the power, aero and ***** for anything like that.

Running 1bar at the moment, but gonna up it to 1.2 when i have everything sorted.

Apparently photobucket is no good. Here the pics are again. As it can be seen, i even reused my factory IC pipes, the one from turbo to the IC is just upside down

928 motorsports make Porsche lettering valve cover inserts that you might want to look into seeing how your red "Porsche" paint is missing in some spots.

That looks great! Nice to see successful budget 16V turbos becoming more popular.

Who made your intake manifold?

My tablet is a 7", which happens to be just perfect on width.
Regarding the lettering on the valve cover, The paint i used was too thick for the purpose, so it started shrinking when the engine heats up. Got to polish the cover and paint the letters again when i have time.
I made the intake manifold myself, chopped an S2 intake for the runners and used 4cm velocity stacks. Welds could be a bit prettier, but I guess I'll grind them off and polish at some point. Also have to make a new engine harness once the winter arrives. 3/4 of my injector cables had broken to reveal the copper wiring, likewise the dme temp sensor and speed&ref. sensor plugs.

Just got the exhaust manifold off to get it sealed properly. I swear I will never use the heat wrap on anything ever again!

Apologies. Bouncing a year old thread for completely selfish reasons.

Question for the OP.. from the pics of the engine bay, it seems you did not follow through with the dual cam gear setup. I assume you repaired the stock head, including the cracked tensioner mount.

Can you share details on the repair, and any pics you have?

Thanks in advance.

Malcolm
