I believe all 951's were made at the Audi plant, wherever that is. I just remember some early criticism that the 951's were not as well built as the other Porsche's because of that.

What about the engines?? Current Boxster engines are assembled in Zuffenhausen and delivered as complete packages ... was it like that with the 944s/951s too?

My 951 is tagged from Stuttgart.

Since the engine is the 928 sliced in half, I expect porsche did it.

I don't see any build quality differences from a 951 and a 911 of the same year. Neither does my mechanic who trained in Germany. He actually has an 87 951 as his keeper car for life. Says he prefers it to the 911 for performance on the track. Since he can pick whatever car he likes, I find that a good sign

The 951 engine was definitely designed by Porsche but the car assembly was done by Audi. See the ratings box ("body structure") of the Road & Track review here comparing the 911 and 951 from 1986.

The balance shaft design came from Mitsubishi.

The 11th digit of the VIN indicates which plant your Porsche was assembled in. For example, my car is WP0AA2952KN151066, so it was assembled in Neckarsulm, Austria. According to Kevin Gross's FAQs, all 924/931/944/951 models were all assembled in Neckarsulm. 968s were assembled in Neckarsulm in 1992, Stuttgart in 1993-1995. The 924 Carrera GT was assembled in Neckarsulm, but the GTS and GTR were assembled in Stuttgart (real Porsches .) I am not sure about the Cabriolets.

I think I remember reading that our engines were built and tested in Stuttgart, then shipped to Neckarsulm for installation, but I don't remember where I read it .

The 951's were all assembled at the Neckarsulm plant about 30 miles north of Stuttgart, using engines that were entirely built at Stuttgart itself. The 944 Register (me included) of the Porsche Club GB spent a week long tour of the factory and area last year as part of the 20 year anniversary of the 944. We drove to Neckarsulm which is 30 miles north of Stuttgart, it was an old Auto Union factory but is now owned by Audi, It was nice to take my car back to where it was born.

I have been told that a few of the very last S2's were actually assembled in Stuttgart once 968 production had started in Neckarsulm, and therefore they will have an S in the chassis number, but I have never seen this verified. I do know that the Turbo Cabs that we have here in England do have an S in the chassis number so must have been assembled at Stuttgart

I do.

Not that it makes it better or worse. Simply because I own one and find its history interesting.

Just a quirk of mine I suppose.
