OOps, Sorry for the dbl reply. I seem to have had too many windows open again!

Anyway, I checked my VIN and according to waterguy, my 86 951 was done in Neckarsulm also.

Jake, Nice article! Would you mind posting the first page of it as well? I'd love to see the rest.

There are build/assembly differences between different countries, but if you have the right quality control, it shouldn't be an issue. Look at all the stuff coming out of China now for electronics. Even Japan doesn't manufacture their own goods anymore. Likewise for cars. Hondas are in Canada, US, as is Toyota and others. Does that mean they're worse? Not necessarily, but each plant's quality has to be measured on its own.

I'm sure the Austrian's did a fine job. It's not like it was assembled in borneo or something My 1986 is still more solid bodywise than many other cars from that era. I do take issue with some of the cheapo plastic and cardboard pieces inside the cabin though. But that's not a reflection of where it was assembled, rather of the design.

Porsche made cars in Austria late '40's & early '50's.

After all, Austrians made great cars.Porsche family is Austrian, even though the village where old Ferdinand was born is located now in Czech Rebulic!

Ferdinad & Ferry Porsche are buried in Zell Am See, Austria.

Neckarsulm is located about 50 km's north of Stuttgart.

I do know that the Turbo Cabs that we have here in England do have an S in the chassis number so must have been assembled at Stuttgart
All Turbo cabriolets were made in Züffenhausen/Stuttgart. If i can remember correctly at least 1991 Turbos were also made there.

The engines were built in Stuttgart. I was there in 85 and toured the factory. They had big racks that would hold 6-9 944 engines that were then sent to the Audi plant were the bodys were built. I have a picture from that trip with the engines on a rack waiting to be loaded.

I originally posted the entire article here. Because this thread is archived in the older format, you'll have to manually extract the URL's to get at the pages.

On your VIN, you can see :

WPOZZZ95ZJN104068 for example
the "J" stands for the year (1988 in my example), and the following letter stands for the plant (N for Neckarlsulm, and S for Zuffenhausen... meaning Stuttgart because of the proximity)

Only the last 944 were made in Stuttgart for the very last months and have a VIN ending with ....ZMS....
The M stands for 1991 model year and only 1991 models can have been made in Zuffenhausen (S in the VIN)

And these cars were/are S2s only (except the RHD turbo cabs, according to Paul).
A friend of mine has an S in the VIN of his MY91 cobalt blue S2 cab.

Drat!

I just spoke to a friend with a 951 Cab here in the UK and he has confirmed that his chassis number has an N and not an S so it was made in Neckarsulm after all.

Another urban myth laid to rest.......

Like Uli953's, my Swiss specs turbo cab also has the "N" for Neckarsulm. Yeah Paul, I'd be surprised if the U.K. turbo cabs were built separately from the German and RoW cars!

As stated by waterguy and others, I believe all 944 and 951 engines were assembled at the Zuffenhausen plant in Stuttgart and mated to the chassis in Neckarsulm.
