after several cans of degreaser and brake cleaner.......I'm actually starting to be able to see the block!
More cleaning and removing of the front engine parts
Getting there.....
the roller on this tensioner was so shot you could spin it in your hand and it would just keep spinning, I don't think this was EVER changed!
All cleaned up and painted

this alternator was rebuilt at some point in its life, time to be cleaned and painted!
seeing how nice this will eventually look once all the grim is out and off!
this is how I knew the alternator had been rebuilt, I pulled the sticker off to paint it.
cleaned the intake in and out and sprayed it to look better
cleaning of the cam tower prior to pulling the cam out
painted and testing to see how good it will look in there once she's done thinning out my wallet
fuel injectors had bad o=rings and the end caps cracked when I tried to removed them, so the obvious thing to do was to clean them up too, used the factory black color to repaint them
At this point the engine is a lot cleaner and deciding whether to pull the motor, just pull the head, or drop pan and head and re-ring and change bearings, decisions-decisions
flushed the block, surprisingly nothing came out except some very green antifreeze, guessing that's a good sign
I hand painted the letters so I'll have to do another coat or two before I clear coat the cam tower, I think it came out pretty damn sweet!
The brake booster vacuum line snapped like a twig when I tried to move it to clean under it, that Lindsey hose kit is looking better and better!
It's actually starting to look really good now that majority of the crap has been cleaned off!

Thanks! I've been doing a little each day since I got the car the beginning of the month, biggest pain is that every part needs to be shipped to me! The majority of the work I've done has been over the past two weeks, since I got the tools from arnnworx, which have made this 100% more doable! Biggest thing was locking the flywheel

Some more progress so far today, need to get some hardware from lowes to pull the crank gears with my puller, but here's some pics of the upper balance shaft cover removed to paint and change seal:
Upper balance shaft looks pretty good, the onion peel is there and the front bearing area seems smooth
Oring looks shot, no surprise, the front bearing looks ok, do we change these? The front seal is a Kaco brand, safe to assume it's been changed before? Do we normally change the seal sleeves as maintenance?
What are your thoughts on this inner bearing?
Cleaned ready for some paint!

So I've decided to continue disassembling the engine to see the condition.....
Here's where I'm at, what does everyone think? Re-ring? Keep going? Head gasket I removed was a reinz, so it's definitely been changed, cylinders 2 and 3 look pretty good for unknown mileage and maintenance, what are your opinions?

Think I'm going to have the guides replaced, need to find a competent shop that can do this head correct. Also found my 2-3 header has a crack in the flange on the 3rd cylinder, guess I'll be looking into new exhaust as well, gotta love it the pit continues to decend deeper!
