I don't know much about bikes, but the last and only time I tried to race one, I was doing about 120mph and I was about to pass this guy on a bike, than I heard his engine revving to this incredible high pitch and ZOOOM he was gone I thought my car had broke down or gone in to reverse. Since that day I look at bike guys with much respect. I still think racing a bike is one of the most insane things there is, you need big ***** and a large LIFE INSURANCE, remember you are riding on a engine with wheels, nothing to hold you in place but your hands.
MY respects for bikers. And yes I believe that a fast bike can spank any 951.

Just did consulting in a car accident investigation - Car at 90 mph left the road and hit the tree - two occupants dead immediately.

So don't be fooled in thinking only bikes are dangerous...

 

Simonk you are right, but correct me if I am wrong. Chances of fatality or serious injuries are higher on motorcycles even at a lower speed, when involved on a collision or any kind of accident where you are ejected from the bike. Is this a correct statement?

 

Lart - most bike accidents involve people with less than 3 months riding experience. An off doesnt mean death though the likelihood is probably greater. A large portion of bike accidents involving fatality happen at lower speeds where the bike is cut in front of, this happens at stop lights all the time. I neve feel unsafe on the bike on the highway at high speed, I feel unsafe in the grocery store parking lot.

Lart - there's no current data on that. It's been a long time since anyone compiled a list of statistics for bikes, and it'll be biased based on locations. Motorcyclists in cities will have more accidents due to brain dead cagers running them over while those in rural settings should see significantly fewer accidents, but probably a higher percentage of single vehicle accidents (rider over their ability).

What I know from personal experience, is that it takes a LOT to cause a fatality, at ANY speed, when you're wearing the proper gear. I've gotten off at over 100mph, been tossed more than 8' in the air, been run over from behind, and the side. All in all, I've kissed pavement probably 2 dozen times (note that I roadraced for 3 years and most of my incidents were from that time), all but once with proper gear. I've sustained 2 injuries - a seperated shoulder and broken wrist. Incidentally, those were from the same accident where a drunk(? not sure, they left the scene) hit me from behind at a stoplight. I road the bike home.

Riding motorcycles IS risky. But I'd rather Live life by taking calculated risks, than mearly Survive life by avoiding risks altogether. I think most anyone who's ridden a motorcycle enough to get past the newbie stage will feel the same way.

 

Brian - I am with you, life without some risk is not worth living. I love riding the bike, I hate riding it in parking lots, at malls, and the like. Too many 16-19 yr old girls on cell phones changing CDs for my taste.

You are all right. The people are all nervous about the bikes just because you are traveling very fast and you are so damn exposed. But as Brian is pointing out, unless you hit your head into something hard the chances are you will shake off the dust and walk away. However, yesterday I was riding on the main road and this huge lorry was coming out from the side road. I had absolute right of way - but this ****** did not see me at all. I was looking to see his eyes - nothing he is looking the other way - so I swang wide around him on the other side of the road - thank god nothing was coming - whilst he just pulled out - this is the real danger more so than falling off.

I think it's simple; you don't wanna fall off the bike at all if possible and you don't want your Porsche to swing the rear end 'round at 100 mph if there are trees around.

But I also think the odds of surviving in the car are greater but than again it's all destiny isn't it. When your number is up your number is up...

 

I agree with you guys 100%, I have seen several motorcycle vs. car accidents here in California and some even involving CHP officers, and in the majority of the cases has been negligence in behalf of the car drivers. I take risks I just don’t have the ***** to ride on a bike at 100mph+,.
You guys take care, there is a lot of stupid drivers out there(specially here on California with no license).
It is weird how a person can be on a airplane traveling at 500mph, 10000 ft above the ground and there is no fear, or climb in top of a tall building and there is no fear, or race at 160+mph on a car and there is no fear, but I ride on a bike and I’ll **** on my pants. I wish ya’ll good luck and I do have a special Respect and admiration for bike guys.

 

Watched the bikes @ Willow Springs last W/E. Must be @ 170+ on the back straight. Hell, maybe 180. Way fast. Jusr a side; V. Rossi (3X and current G/P champ + 125 and 250cc first yr.'s) has won 46% of all races entered. The guy looks like he's 16 yrs. old. Ofered 10M from Yamaha to leave Honda. I recall when Jacques V. took the money and left Williams. Anyway, he is by all accounts, the best right now. Possibly a match for anyone whose ever raced a bike. Watch him sometime. Probably as dominant as Michael Schumacher. Maybe more. I own a bike. On the street, you can never, ever relax. That's OK, if you understand what that means. 46%! Human?
