Hey Doug I am using Goetze rings in mine and I have 3000 miles on it with no issues. I did a very light hone with fine ball hone and lots of lube.

Can you elaborate more? I just ruined my bores accidentally by cleaning them with sodium hydroxide. I'm about to order the sunnen paste ($60) and attempt a DIY hone with a DIY felt covered standard hone.

Hopefully I'll return the bores to a good finish without ruining the clearances and requiring oversize pistons.

You should be fine with that method. I used a silicon carbide flex hone and liberal amounts of aerokroil. probably not the best method but it worked for me.Next time I will try the felt pads and the paste. When I did hone mine I did each bore for less than 3 seconds. I have a set of rings for one bore I can send you for checking ring gap after your honing if you like, I don't have a full set but at least you will be able to check the gap before you buy a full set.

here is a link to the pictures of my build, you can see what the bores looked like. Not quite the dull grey they should be but oh well.

The car has held up just fine on a long 250 mile road trip held it at 120MPH for a good 5 minutes 3 times on that trip and I auto-crossed it once. I use about 3/4 of a quart of oil every 1000 miles and I do have 2 small oil leaks.

The bores are now being honed with AN-30. I understand this wont appreciably change piston to wall clearance, but am I still better off using low mileage, in spec, jet washed OEM rings vs new goetse on my freshly honed bores?

want to add some more data points here.

I just measured up the rings that came off a well running 100mm bore NA engine with 15xK miles on it.

The first ring measured 4.18mm, the second measured 3.93mm, and the third measured 2.53mm.

These values are significantly less than the ones Voith posted, except for the third ring which is actually thicker. I wonder if they rings really wore that much or if there is significant difference in radial thickness between OEM 100mm and 101mm bore ring sets.

Or differences in NA vs Turbo radial thickness.

These are the measurements for the rings from my 86 951, factory 100mm rings with a hair over 100k miles on them.

1st: 4.20mm
2nd: 4.19mm
3rd: 2.92mm

Hi there, im in the same boat as you are, rebuilding my engine on a budget. Engine is around 100k miles too. Was thinking of just changing the rod bearings but figured i would check the ring and found your tread...so here is my measurements:

1st: 4.16mm
2nd: 4.20mm
3rd: 2.68mm

So it looks like my rings have a bit more wear than yours. Question now, what do we need to order exactly ?

Pelican has two sets:

or

Thanks.
