I thought only the 944 83 year had a manual rack, have to change tie rods to work for your late car and you can not use a 924 manual rack from my understanding.
ehall,
there's a lot of different things on that website.
what is most relevant is..
they take a standard, 944 power steering rack, weld the torsion bar/valve assembly solid (so there is no free play in the internal linkage), grease the rack, and plug the line holes. this is the option i intend to take.
i have not yet used their services but intend to (for the added benefit of the welded torsion shaft, this will make the steering movement more precise).
for the last few years i have just had a power steering rack with all hydraulics removed, greased the **** out of the rack, and plugged all the fluid holes with allen plugs. feel is good but there is some slop due to very worn u-joints.
the 924 rack is not suitable for the 944, you need crossmember adapters and a different steering shaft.
late-offset is determined by the tie rod length, the power racks are the same.
manual racks pretty much only came on 82 or 83 944s, even some of those had PS optional.
Just read that article very interesting but sorry almost 700 ain't worth it to me. 944 manual racks 2yrs ago went for 250-300 and then you would buy different tie rods. Which gives you a bolt in affair and uses factory parts. De-powered rack takes a few hours and only cost like 10 bucks or less. Granted different turn ratio's I'm sure the factory manual is a bit easier but pssssh chicks like big arms lol.

go back and re-read it...
Full race only refurbished power rack converted to manual, 3.5 = 141 mm ratio. complete with shorter steering universal shaft, new tie rods, ends, and boots. Pinion locked and all hydraulic holes plugged. Pre 1987 $415. 1987 on $495. Add $160 for solid mounts.
OR
On exchange your old power rack required, use your existing tie rods, ends, rubber mounts and steering shaft. $250. Add $160 for solid mounts.
so send him a rack, he'll convert it to "full manual" for $250 and you reinstall it with your existing linkage...
I have a 83 manual rack with late offset manual tierods in my 951 - I like it and it feels good (and no leaks!) but it can be annoying in parking lots / turning around at low speed. Once moving its great.
I have a depowered rack in my spec 944 racecar - I like it better ratio wise. I know the car is lighter and smaller tires etc but it just feels better IMHO.
To convert manual rack to later offset you need: Moog VO-AX-7181(VW TA1283) tie rods and two female tie rod ends: Lockheed - Delphi TA770 (BMW : 3211 1116 463, Volvo : 3211955 - 3265974 ,VW : 171 419 812.)
