944 CV Joint Gaskets?

Hi Roger, apologies for my curt reply.
I did what you did a while ago and it eliminated the clunking as well, briefly.
My guess is that, due to the different angles of the inner and outer CV's, the ***** are running on a different part of the channels - slightly removed from the original wear spot, but still on the same side of the channel.
So the clunk went away for a while.
When the clunk came back, I removed the CV's and inspected. Then I had my "aha!" moment and realised that I hadn't made any change to the loading direction on the CV's.
Anyone reading this thread in the future will hopefully think all this through...
If the clunk comes back, can you post your findings in this thread, for completeness?
Thanks, and best regards,
Mike

Again, I only did this as a temporary fix. I know I "kicked the can down the road a bit". The car will only be driven for a couple more months, then stored for the winter. I plan on replacing the axles before we take it out again next spring.
I'll definitely update if anything changes.
Thanks.

Do you mean swap left axle to right side, and right axle to left side? And, without disassembly, the old outer CV becomes the new inner CV, and the old inner CV becomes the new outer CV?

Swapping left for right is what gets it done. You can keep the outers as outers if you like, doesn't make much difference.
Cheers,
Mike
