Default Stock AFM behind headlight???

Anyone done this???

I know Kolken, I think, sells an adapter or kit to relocate stock AFM with cone filter behind headlight, but a little pricey.

I was looking to do it my self and not sure it can be done, even with Kolken's kit only having one 45 degree adapter, still looks like the J boot would have to be modified or taken out completely.

Help??

My car came like this. Don't do it...its horrible. The PO used a 45 degree bend 3" polished stainless tube that attached to a cut J-boot. The wires for the AFM were spliced/lengthened so that they could reach. Then they attached a cone air filter that stuck through the drivers side fender. When it rained I sucked up water. Also, the air filter has to be way too small for it to fit, which will reduce the amount of air you can get into the motor. I would totally avoid this. It's a really cheap looking/performing mod. Either get a legitimate relocation kit or just run a K&N using the stock airbox.

The Kokeln kit is a bit pricey but you do get intercooler pipes with it, all new silicone boots and clamps, filter, new BOV hose, and you do not have to cut the harness to the AFM - it reaches the AFM just fine. Those pics are old on LR site, here it is today.

I'll see if I have some pics of my car when I first got it.....possibly posting on Monday(i'm gone all weekend). The problem is that the AFM box is huge and fitting it along with a filter near the headlight is next to impossible. My PO punched a hole in the inner fender and fed the filter in there....bad idea. The other thing I really hated was the cut J-boot never sealed really well. Notice all of the ribs on the J-boot? Well, those don't let hose clamps put even pressure down which allows unfiltered air to be sucked in. Ahhhh..enough ranting...i'll see if I can post some pics.

I know Matt,,I think it could be done for less too; although I did buy it with some other things at the same time and got a little bit of a price break.

If you check a couple of other sites, intake pipes are 325-400 plus polishing(alum or ss), the filter is what...$60-80, silicone boots,,$20 ea ? That leaves the adaptor for the turbo plus hose there, BOV hose, and then the pc for the 45° for the filter. All in all, not a bad deal I think but again, I think that it could be priced better too.

Thank you John, it's been alot of fun but I must give slevy951 and KLA credit for their assistance in the cam tower.

Ski, is that the stock afm in that pic??? Doesn't look the same.

So what is their secret???

Just the 45 degree elbow?? As I have one, but still can't get everything to fit in there with out cutting up the J boot.

Todd, yes it is. You have to remember that it is turned around a bit, but it is the stock 87. The Kokeln kit has an aluminum pc off the turbo, hose to the AFM, then the aluminum 45° to the K&N filter.

I asked about this here a while back. Sean951 was working on one. I don't know if he finished it. I just did a search on pipe and user name SEAN951 and found my original post. I don't know how or if i can link the original post here, so do the search.

No it does not use the j-boot; hose and aluminum pc, which accpets the old hose as the ends are cut where the crimps were.

SEAN951, wasn't he building intercooler pipes for a while?
