Default Should I Change Timing Belt

I had my timing belt, water pump, and rollers last changed in 2005 when my 944 turbo had only 10,000 miles. Fast forward 10 years and the car has 18,000 miles. Should I have the belt changed again? Its always been in a climate controlled garage, never raced, etc. No oil leaks. Belt was re-tensioned after installed. Do the belts age that much in 10 years?

I would change them, the suggested interval is 3 years regardless of mileage IRRC

Change them! Would be insane not to on an 18k '89 (in my opinion). Tell us more about that car!

+30k? I dunno, a pristine '89 951 with 18k miles? I'm thinking at least that, maybe more at the right auction...

Change for sure. That is too valuable a car to damage the motor.

I've seen the car - it's immaculate.

I would absolutely change the belts.

The factory recommendation is 5 years, and I see no reason to replace more frequently.

That would be a yes. Cheap compared to what could happen. Not worth taking a chance.

Thanks for the advice. I will change. I assume the water pump and rollers are fine after only 8000 miles.

Do an inspection of everything to make sure nothing is seized up. If in doubt replace the rollers and pump too.

I have seen 8 year old timing belts from a car in Colorado and they looked perfect. I have also seen 3 year old belts here in Texas dry and cracked. I see no reason to change belts less frequently than factory recommendations. But conditions may warrant more frequent changes.
