Visual-inspection is where it falls into the grey area. They have A LOT of discretion here as it's up to the operator running the smog-check. Searching for "smog check" here, CA smog difficulties have run a wide gamut. Good to have connections with a "friendly" smog-shop.

No headers to worry about either.
Where do you place the mandatory massive turbo if you clock the engine on the exhaust side?
Not to mention sump and intake design.

a pipe around the back and the turbo on the intake side seems to work ok

What he said. The pan really is the only real obstacle. It would need to be rear sump and canted.

Looking at the pan setup, I think the M54 inline six would drop straight in without even touching pan and it is canted from factory just like the 944.

Interesting.. I've always looked at the S50 in my M3 and thought it looked possible for someone with the right skills.

From the pics I've seen, It looks like the detachable bell housing from its auto trans is perfect.

We can make it happen, its half a V12 lol.

One of the beauties of this straight six is the possibility to use a twin scroll set up on a big turbo close to the head outlets, with none of this cross-pipe nonsense.
Redesigning the pan, headers, turbo layout and intake pretty much negates all the benefits of cost-effective, out of the box and proven aftermarket parts available for the 2JZ engine.
You would shoot yourself in the foot big time tilting the engine for just the reason of reusing the stock 944 brake booster/master cylinder.
But then I would be happy to be proven wrong.

It would be much cheaper and more funtional to remove Booster etc and put in a pedal box.

doesnt that sacrifice some foot/leg room though?
maybe not an issue on track (move the seat back to compensate) but inconvenient on street.

Perhaps for really tall people Spence. Yes, you would lose some leg room although it's not all that much. I'd still be exploring that option before committing to clocking the motor and dealing with all the fall out of that.

There was also a guy in Puerto Rico that put 2JZ into 951 about 15-yrs ago.

And a guy in Chile that put 1JZ into a 944 back in 2004.

I finally got ahold of all the GM bellhousings and the adapter plate for the 3.8 v6 I'm working on will be the same for ANY GM engine. This is the GM I4,5,6 detachable bell.....The 4.2 Inline 6 has been used in a few Supra swaps to replace the heavy 2jz due to its heavy iron -block.
