Default 951 wins Class 1 " again "

Yesterday , Sydney Motorsport Park ( SMP ) Eastern Creek , Sydney Australia, interesting weather , storms the night & early morning with snowdrifts of small hail still evident in gullies etc .
Wet track during the morning , overcast all day & track slowly drying during the day , but water running / draining across the track ( mostly mid corners ) = nice

Good turn out of Porsche's with a lot of GT3's of all year types , the basic classes in the PCNSW are }

Open = Racing Slicks ( mainly full race GT3's / RSR's/ 962 replica & not street registrable , generally speaking )

Class 1 = "R" spec tyres but unlimited HP / KW ( street registered latest model GT3's & most GT2's etc

Class 2 = "R" spec but has to fall into a power to weight category ( older GT3's mainly )

Class 3 = "R" Spec Tyres & has has a lower power to weight category ( 997 etc )

Classes 4 , 5 & 6 = "R" Spec Tyres & has a even lower power to weight respectively

Sean Buchanan ( 1986 3.0L 16V 951) , held the 951 flag ( alone ) in the higher classes , winning Class 1

Here are the top 10 places for the Porsche's on "R" Spec Road legal tyres in descending "time " order }

Note } The two GT3's between position 5 & 6 plus 9th & 10th, I left in to give perspective

1st = GT3 in class 2 = 1:09.3632
2nd = GT3 in class 2 = 1:09.4616
3rd = Sean's 951 in class 1 = 1:09.9026
4th = 997GT3 in class 1
5th = GT3 in class 1
-----------------
996 Cup Car on slicks ( open Class )
996 GT3 on slicks ( open class)
------------------
6th = 991 GT3 CS in class 1
7th = 991S in class 2
8th = 987 Cayman ( modified with bigger engine etc )in class 2
9th = 987 Spyder class 3
--------------------
993 GT2 on slicks ( open class )
-------------------
10th = 997 GT3 in class 2

Bit of a rundown of the day, We have had some reasonably wet weather in the past week in Sydney, with the weekend forecast as clear we were pretty hopeful of some fast runs. Come Sunday, it had been raining during the night and left the track damp. During the drivers briefing it began to rain again. Not a good sign. Not only was the track wet but because of the weeks constant rain and little track runoff there were patches and small rivers of water running through the track. This made session one difficult to say the least. Compared with some of the GT3s we were a few seconds slower, the linear power delivery of the NA's seem to be much better suited compared with the torque spike of our turbo. I took the first session gingerly. Still did not help with a spin between turn 6 and 7 a few laps in.

Within an hour of two and all the cars we had a somewhat clean track again with only a few sections still wet. Here we put in some pretty good times. Almost up to our PB on slicks which was a 1:09.5.
Here is our first session in the wet. Its cautious driving thats for sure

That's a fun but nervous situation. What people tend to forget is the wet outfield and the consequences of coming off at speed. Specially when it's your daily driver. See how easily the car wanted to rotate as best exemplified by the slow motion spin in the Wet session video!

You can see in the dry(er) session how you caught Warwick in the Black 996 GT3 on the first straight and then let him move ahead. That car is reputed to have a 4ltr racemotor in it and is very fast. I've watched him pull out and try and overtake Bruce Hibbard in his modified 996 GT2 down the main straight!

Hopefully the next meeting is dry. Nice pics by Bruce again.

Hi Shawn, tyres are currently Hankook Z221 R spec in 285 18 all round. The hankook could be held on par with the yokohama A050 R spec, both i believe are not available in the USA. Both of these tyres are a good deal ahead of their competition being the A048s, Nittos and 888's. Infact probably as a good comparison we are doing the same or even better times with the Z221 as the previous Hoosier R100 slicks we were using.
Suspension, we run Moton Clubsports with 750, 850 front to rear springs, Tenders and release bearings on the front with Racers edge camber plates. 944 S2 stub axles and hubs with early steel control arms with original bushings. M030 sway bars front and rear. 928 GTS brakes with Pagid blacks. We use to run the elephant racing polybronze in the rear until this past weekend when the LHS flogged out. I just replaced it with stock spring plates. Nicer ride. The car is a compromise for both street and track as you can see with the rates we run. Sure we could a stiffer setup and be faster on track but it would ruin the road worthiness of the car. In the end we like that its a road car that we can take on the track
Regards
Sean

Great stuff Sean, another awesome effort. Bruce great pics that show the huge variety of cars that attend these events.

On a side note, can Patrick enter his car in the PCNSW events anymore ? would it qualify for open ?

Yes , Patrick's 951 can go into open class ( like last year ) and he and his 951 should be back at the track soon ( I hope), Sean went down this evening to Paul's workshop to help assemble Pat's latest 2.5L engine , so these is a small chance it might make Wakefield for the next Supersprint , but we will see
